THE ROLE
This is a hands-on bookkeeping position with a focus on VAT. You will manage client records, prepare VAT returns, and support system automation within a busy practice environment. The role involves helping clients optimise their records through cloud platforms, particularly Xero, and participating in process improvements. Responsibilities include:
Managing and accurately posting client transactions using Xero and related tools such as Dext and other integrations
Preparing and submitting VAT returns, ensuring correct VAT coding and allocations across different industries
Organising and controlling client records, performing quality checks with checklists, and suggesting efficiencies without compromising quality
Responding promptly to client queries and chasing answers to ensure smooth communication
Assisting with Xero onboarding, setup, and delivering basic training to clients
Identifying opportunities for process automation and workflow enhancement
Supporting senior staff with audits and regulatory compliance
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
This role is suited to someone with practical experience working in an accountancy firm, who is keen to challenge the status quo and improve existing systems. You will need a good grasp of Xero, VAT regulations, and excellent client-facing skills.
Mandatory:
At least 2 years’ experience in bookkeeping within an accountancy practice
Proven skills in Xero, including cloud-based record management and transaction posting
Strong knowledge of VAT rules and compliance, with experience preparing VAT returns
AAT qualification or equivalent experience
Ability to communicate clearly and build relationships with clients and colleagues
Proactive mindset with enthusiasm for process improvement
Preferred:
Experience with QuickBooks and FreeAgent
Knowledge of industry-specific VAT rules and regulations
Exposure to automation tools and reporting software like Power BI
Experience in small-to-medium practice environments
