Design Manager – Main Contractor (Commercial Projects)

Location: Cambridge

Salary: Competitive + Package

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced Design Manager to join our growing team and lead the design delivery of high‑value commercial construction projects . This is a key role within our pre‑construction and project delivery teams, offering the opportunity to shape major schemes from concept through to handover.

As a main contractor, we pride ourselves on delivering technically challenging projects with precision, collaboration, and innovation. You’ll be at the centre of that—coordinating design, driving quality, and ensuring buildability at every stage.

Key Responsibilities

Manage the full design process across commercial projects from tender through delivery

Lead design coordination meetings with consultants, subcontractors, and internal teams

Review drawings, specifications, and technical submissions to ensure compliance and buildability

Identify design risks and develop mitigation strategies

Work closely with pre‑construction teams on bids, value engineering, and programme planning

Ensure design information is delivered on time and aligns with project requirements

Maintain strong relationships with clients, design partners, and project stakeholders

Champion innovation, digital design tools, and best practice across the business

About You

Proven experience as a Design Manager within a main contractor environment

Strong track record delivering commercial projects (offices, mixed‑use, retail, industrial, etc.)

Excellent technical knowledge of construction methods, regulations, and design processes

Confident communicator with the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams

Skilled in problem‑solving, coordination, and managing multiple workstreams

Proficient with design management tools and digital platforms (e.g., BIM, document control systems)
