Due to increased demand and internal growth, we are seeking an additional Discipline Manager for our Civil & Structural Team. This key role will partner with one of our Nuclear projects, acting as the main contact for engineering requirements within the sector. The successful candidate will have line management responsibility for our D&NE specific engineering resource.
Responsibilities
The Discipline Manager – Integration and Special Projects, oversees Digital Engineering, Civil, Structural Engineers, and Geotechnical Engineers, focusing on power, energy, water, and industrial sectors. The team currently comprises 70 staff, supporting consistent growth.
The Discipline Manager reports to the Group Director of Engineering Services and manages technical and personnel aspects of the discipline teams, ensuring project delivery through effective processes and systems.
This hybrid role is based at the Costain Engineering hub in Manchester, with an expectation of working in the office two to three days per week. Our flexible working policy allows employees to discuss and agree on flexible work arrangements based on individual and team needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the discipline team, allocate resources across multiple projects, and ensure skillset alignment with project demands.
- Achieve departmental budget and utilization targets.
- Forecast resource needs and recruit accordingly.
- Manage staff performance and development planning.
- Maintain knowledge of local market resources and high-demand discipline skills.
- Ensure compliance with corporate processes and standards.
- Support professional development and coordinate with professional institutions.
- Develop technical design estimates for work-winning and tendering activities.
Technical Assurance
- Oversee engineering and design operations within a multi-discipline team.
- Ensure safe-by-design, compliant, sustainable, and digitally-enabled technical outputs.
- Maintain adherence to technical standards, competency, software systems, and lessons learned.
- Possess strong knowledge of UK regulations, including The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and BS5975-1 for Temporary Works Management.
- Support project delivery and client engagement at all stages.
Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant subject area
- Chartered Engineer status
- Recent UK project experience
- Understanding of sectors like Nuclear, Energy, Water, Rail, Aviation
- Knowledge of the entire delivery process from work winning to handover
- Effective communication skills, flexible outlook, presentation abilities
- Willingness to travel across the UK, including site visits and supplier meetings
- Ability to prioritize and meet multiple deadlines
