Job Description

Financial Controller - Payments | Fintech | Scale-up Environment | Leadership Role

We’re looking for a confident, hands-on Financial Controller with experience in the Payments Space to take ownership of a fast-moving finance function and bring structure, clarity and control where it really counts.

This is a senior role for someone who thrives in complexity, enjoys rolling up their sleeves, and knows how to build robust finance operations that scale. You’ll work closely with the CFO, lead a small but growing team, and play a critical role in shaping the financial backbone of a regulated fintech business.

If you’re decisive, proactive, and comfortable operating without a playbook - this role is for you.

What you’ll be doing

  • Run the annual budget and quarterly forecasting cycles
  • Lead the full external audit process end-to-end
  • Own VAT returns, R&D tax credit inputs, and regulatory reporting
  • Partner with the business to explain performance, not just report it
  • Ensure accuracy of client balances in collaboration with Operations & Payments
  • Take full ownership of the ERP system (NetSuite)

Build control and scale

  • Rebuild and strengthen core finance processes and controls
  • Introduce structure, discipline and scalable workflows
  • Identify efficiency gains, cost improvements and risk reduction
  • Support the CFO on strategic and operational initiatives
  • Embed regulatory and governance best practice, including Consumer Duty

Lead and develop

  • Lead, coach and develop a high-performing finance team
  • Set clear objectives, run regular 1:1s, and raise the bar on performance
  • Hire and grow the team as the business scales
  • Create a positive, accountable, delivery-focused culture

What we’re looking for

Essential

  • Payments industry experience is a must
  • Proven experience in team management and development
  • Fully qualified accountant (ACA / ACCA / CIMA)

  • Strong understanding of R&D tax credits
  • Comfortable juggling priorities in a fast-paced, evolving business

Nice to have

  • Experience in regulated environments
  • NetSuite expertise
  • Experience scaling finance teams in growth businesses
