Group Finance Director (Private Equity Backed)
New Yesterday
My client, a PE-backed 1000+ employee business in the North West is looking for a high-calibre Group Finance Director to join at a really exciting point in its journey. The business has a clear ambition to scale towards a £1bn exit over the next 2-4 years. The challenge is capacity - there’s a lot to do to get the Group “exit ready” and to manage a number of strategic projects across the group; they need someone senior, credible and hands-on to lead that charge. There are five Financial Controllers reporting directly into this role and a wider finance team of 30. The team are capable and as the business grows, will themselves progress and develop under your leadership and mentoring. As Group Finance Director, you’ll work closely with them and the wider business leadership – partnering alongside the group’s Managing Directors to help them run their businesses better, strengthening decision-making and driving real value across the Group.A significant part of the role (approximately 70-80%) will be transformation, M&A, exit-prep and project-led work with the remainder being leadership of the finance team. Example projects include ERP change, automation, offshoring, better KPI and reporting packs, and business partnering across around 20 entities. Exit preparation is front and centre - this will be a tough due diligence process with a new acquirer given their scale - they need someone who has been through a PE exit before and knows what “good” looks like. This is very much a doer role. They want someone who spots opportunities and challenges, leads from the front, and doesn’t need hand-holding. You’ll need the ability to partner with Managing Directors whilst navigating group strategy, making commercial decisions and running with them to fruition. Personality really matters here: it’s a good-spirited team that works hard in an enjoyable culture, so they want someone who can balance support and guidance with high expectations. There’s also real exposure to acquisitions, with the opportunity to be heavily involved in M&A activity, particularly if you’ve done this before. Whether your background is from a larger or smaller business isn’t the key thing -what matters is that you can operate at a strategic level within a business targeting a £1bn valuation. The role is ideally four days a week in the office and whilst a long notice period may be workable, shorter is preferred. The package reflects the seniority and impact of the role, with a competitive salary, bonus and a strong equity-related management incentive plan. This is a career-defining role - Group FD of a business on a trajectory towards £1Bn.
