Title: Principal/ Lead Mathematician Rate: £450-£550 Outside IR35 Contract duration: 3 months (Initially) Start date: Immediately! We're partnering with a highly technical, early-stage organisation building a next-generation, AI-driven decision platform. They're looking for a Principal / Lead Mathematician to own the mathematical foundation that underpins the entire system. This is a rare opportunity to sit at the heart of product design - translating human problem-solving processes into rigorous mathematical, algorithmic and optimisation models that power summarisation, semantic search, and decision-support workflows. You'll lead the design and validation of core algorithms, working closely with Data Scientists and Engineers to embed mathematically sound models into a modular, cloud-native platform. What you'll be doing Designing end-to-end mathematical models that translate real-world workflows into executable system logic Applying

algebraic modelling, graph theory, optimisation and statistics

to complex, unstructured data problems Prototyping and validating algorithms in

Python and MATLAB Shaping the mathematical backbone of

vector search, intent extraction and LLM-driven workflows Producing clear, auditable documentation in

LaTeX and Jupyter Acting as the mathematical authority across the platform and mentoring others where needed What we're looking for Strong background in

applied mathematics, operations research or optimisation Proven experience with

graph-based models, algorithm design and probabilistic methods Comfortable working alongside

Data Science and Engineering teams Ability to translate abstract, human-led processes into formal mathematical representations Experience supporting AI / ML-driven systems (theoretical or applied) This role suits someone who enjoys

owning complex problems from first principles , shaping both the theory and its real-world application in a cutting-edge technical environment. If you're interested in this role or know someone who would be, then please apply with an updated CV and reach out to a. methula@ioassociates. co.uk
