Job Description
Mechanical Design Engineer – Water Industry (Permanent or Outside IR35)
My client is a well-established engineering design consultancy supporting major programmes within the UK regulated water sector . Due to continued growth and a strong AMP workload, they are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to support the delivery of high-quality mechanical design packages across clean and wastewater projects.
This opportunity is open to both permanent candidates and Outside IR35 contractors.
The Role / Assignment
Produce mechanical design calculations and drawings for water industry schemes
Deliver design outputs that meet safety, quality, and regulatory requirements
Coordinate and support CAD technicians
Prepare scopes and review outputs from subcontract M&E design teams
Liaise with equipment suppliers and manufacturers, including technical review of tenders
Prepare design investigations, reports, and technical specifications
Ensure compliance with relevant technical, professional, and water company standards
Implement and record design changes in line with project controls
Estimate design hours and support project planning
Attend and present at design and project meetings
About You
5+ years’ mechanical design experience in the UK water industry
Experience across wastewater and clean water, infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects
Strong hydraulic design capability
Understanding of construction methods, materials, and buildability
Knowledge of engineering drawing standards
Degree, HND, or equivalent experience from technician level
Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership
Confident IT user with relevant design software experience
