Overview
A leading infrastructure consultancy is seeking a skilled and experienced Principal Geologist to manage the technical delivery of complex ground investigation projects. This is a senior leadership role focused on project oversight, technical assurance, client engagement, and team development. You’ll be responsible for shaping investigation strategies and ensuring the highest standards of geotechnical data, analysis, and reporting across a portfolio of infrastructure schemes.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
Lead the planning and delivery of ground investigation (GI) works
Provide technical guidance to teams on logging, in-situ testing, sampling, and AGS data management
Review and approve factual and interpretative reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards
Manage reporting in accordance with BS5930, EC7, and project specifications
Act as technical lead on multi-disciplinary project teams
Project & Client Oversight
Scope and manage GI packages, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery
Oversee subcontractors and ensure H&S compliance on all active sites
Support tendering and proposal writing for new project bids
Attend client meetings, provide briefings, and act as a key point of contact throughout project life cycles
Mentoring & Development
Mentor junior and mid-level staff, supporting Chartership and RoGEP progression
Lead internal CPD sessions and promote knowledge sharing within the team
Help shape and grow technical standards, best practice processes, and quality frameworks
Requirements
Degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, or Geotechnical Engineering
Chartered status (CGeol or CEng)
Minimum 10 years’ experience in ground investigation or geotechnical consultancy
Proven experience leading and delivering GI works on major civil engineering or infrastructure projects
Strong understanding of UK GI standards (BS5930, EC7) and AGS data formats
Excellent communication and leadership skills
Familiarity with HoleBASE, gINT, or other logging/reporting platforms
Full UK driving licence
CSCS card or equivalent certification
