Job Description

Principal Mechanical Engineer – Complex Systems

Location: North East UK | Hybrid/Flexible | Competitive Salary

Are you a Principal or Senior Mechanical Engineer looking for your next challenge? We’re seeking a highly skilled Mechanical engineer to lead the design and delivery of complex, multi-component mechanical systems while shaping engineering standards and mentoring other engineers.

In this hands-on senior role, you’ll take full ownership of projects across the entire product lifecycle. From concept development, 3D CAD modelling, and FEA analysis through prototyping, testing, and production handover. You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver robust, manufacturable, and high-performance mechanical solutions, all while helping guide and develop the wider engineering team.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Leading the mechanical design of multi-component systems, taking technical ownership of your projects
  • Producing and maintaining high-quality documentation including CAD models, drawings, BOMs, calculations, and test reports
  • Mentoring engineers and driving best practice, design reviews, and engineering standards
  • Collaborating with electronics, software, and systems teams to deliver fully integrated solutions
  • Balancing hands-on design work with reviewing and guiding wider project outputs

Who we’re looking for:

  • Proven experience at a Principal or Senior Mechanical Engineer level
  • Strong background in full lifecycle mechanical engineering of complex systems
  • Expertise in 3D CAD (Creo, SolidWorks, Catia, Inventor), assemblies, and PLM systems
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, DFMA, tolerance analysis, and design for reliability
  • Track record of mentoring engineers and leading technical design teams
  • Practical, hands-on problem solver with a focus on innovation and reliability

Why this role is exciting:

You’ll have the opportunity to lead technically challenging projects, shape the engineering culture, and see your designs come to life. This is your chance to combine technical leadership with hands-on engineering ownership, delivering solutions that make a tangible impact.

If you’re ready to take the next step in your career, we’d love to hear from you.
