Principal Thermal Engineer - Stevenage\n\nPrincipal Thermal Engineer\n Location: Stevenage\n Duration: 12 months, with potential extension\n Rate: Up to £50 per hour (Umbrella)\n Clearance: SC required to start\n Working Pattern: Onsite role (minimum 3 days per week, but assume full-time onsite)\n\nWe're looking for an experienced Principal Thermal Engineer to join a leading defence engineering team in Stevenage. You'll be part of a well-established Mechanical Analysis Group, working on complex and varied projects that shape the next of advanced military systems.\n\nThe Role\n\nYou'll take technical ownership of thermal analysis activities, supporting projects from early concept stages through to final performance evidence. This includes:\n\nDelivering packages of thermal analysis work with clear conclusions\n\nUsing a mix of hand calculations and Finite Element methods (e.g.
ANSYS)\n\nProducing thermal studies involving conduction, convection and radiation\n\nSupporting thermal analysis of electronic assemblies and embedded systems\n\nUsing MATLAB/Simulink, CFD tools or Python/MATLAB scripting where required\n\nPresenting findings in reports and at design reviews\n\nWorking closely with multi-disciplinary teams and project stakeholders\n\nManaging your workload and providing regular progress updates\n\nThis position is ideal for someone who combines technical depth with strong communication skills and enjoys collaborating across engineering disciplines.\n\nWhat We're Looking For\n\nDegree in a STEM discipline (or equivalent experience)\n\nProven background in thermal analysis\n\nExperience with heat transfer modelling using analytical and FEA methods\n\nOne or more of the following is desirable:\n\nThermal analysis of electronic systems\n\nMATLAB/Simulink thermal modelling\n\nCFD for thermal behaviour\n\nPython/MATLAB scripting\n\nAbility to make quick, practical assessments to support design decisions\n\nConfident communicator able to collaborate with internal and external teams\n\nExperience from defence, aerospace or electronics sectors is beneficial\n\nWhy Join?\n\nThis is an excellent opportunity to take a key role in a major defence engineering environment, working alongside highly skilled colleagues and contributing to products used globally.
