Work directly for quants, identify more opportunities to leverage machine learning in a technically agnostic team.

You’re also going to be working under a manager who’s been a founding member of this team, who loves technical innovation and empowers his engineers to progress both their technical skills and their careers. It’s a highly collaborative team, architecting and developing all kinds of cloud-native distributed platforms used daily by the quant researchers.

As mentioned, the team is technically agnostic, but currently are using a mix of C++, Java, Python and MATLAB, with some recent projects in Rust. Other tools like Spark, Flink and Kafka are used from a data streaming point of view along with other technologies like Kubernetes, Helm and more. There’s no limit to what technologies can be used. If you have a suggestion to use a new piece of tech, the team will listen and implement.

Your “customers” are the quant teams. The teams that generate the trading strategies and bring in the revenue for the business. You have a direct impact on researcher’s ability to do their jobs and therefore a direct impact on the PnL of the firm. You’ll see your work make an impact every single day, one example could be that you’re taking a research idea that’s been built on a small scale, perhaps with a months’ worth of data, then scaling it to cope with several years and several terabytes or even petabytes of data.

The team is kept small and agile so that every engineer has maximum input and maximum impact.

You’ll likely have guessed already that this is a high performing and high calibre team, so it’s immediately not going to be a role or a company for everyone. That’s totally okay. You’ll likely be coming from a similar technical environment, where you’ve built various aspects of large-scale distributed platforms before, ideally in a financial environment. If you’ve not worked in finance before, you’ve worked in a similar complex tech firm.

To clarify, essential experience will be in the designing and building of large scale distributed systems. The rest is fairly flexible as you’ll have definitely done this using C++, Java or even Python. Any experience doing this in a hedge fund or HFT firm would be fantastic, alternatively working closely with Data Scientists in a tech firm that ingests petabytes of data will be interesting.

You’re going to be joining a Hedge Fund with a strong history of outstanding performance, producing consistent returns for investors. They constantly invest in new technology, listen to new ideas and aim to keep ahead of the curve as much as possible on all things. Hence the creation of this team.

You’ll also be paid and treated well. Starting total compensation could be as high as £300,000. This is split between salary and bonuses, approximately 50/50 in your first year. There are a range of perks and benefits, such as free breakfast and lunch cooked by an in-house chef, on-site gym and various health and life insurances that you can choose from.

Additionally, they take their impact on the environment seriously and offset their CO2 emissions. They’re not a stereotypical Hedge Fund/Finance Company.
