Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Section Engineer with extensive drainage experience to work on the HS2 programme, based in Chipping Warden. The successful candidate will support the delivery of complex highways and rail drainage works, ensuring construction activities are delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with HS2 standards and UK regulations.
This is a permanent opportunity to work on one of the UK’s largest and most high‑profile infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
Take engineering responsibility for allocated drainage sections, including surface water, foul, attenuation systems, culverts, headwalls, and outfalls
Set out works in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, and HS2 technical standards
Manage and coordinate site activities, subcontractors, and plant to ensure programme and quality targets are achieved
Ensure works are delivered in compliance with design, environmental, and safety requirements
Review and implement drainage designs, RFIs, permits, and technical queries
Maintain accurate site records including as‑built information, progress reporting, and quality documentation
Support the implementation of ITPs, RAMS, permits to dig, and temporary works requirements
Liaise closely with the Site Agent, Project Engineer, designers, and stakeholders
Monitor materials, workmanship, and testing to ensure compliance with specifications
Promote a strong health, safety, and environmental culture on site
Required Experience & Skills
Proven experience working as a Section Engineer (or equivalent) on major civil engineering or infrastructure projects
Extensive hands‑on drainage experience is essential, ideally within large‑scale highways or rail schemes
Strong understanding of earthworks and interfaces with drainage construction
Experience working in highly regulated environments and to strict technical standards (HS2 experience desirable)
Competent with setting out using GPS and traditional surveying techniques
Strong knowledge of QA processes, ITPs, and construction documentation
Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary works and manage subcontractors effectively
Qualifications
HNC / HND / Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
CSCS card (relevant level)
SMSTS or SSSTS (preferred)
Temporary Works Coordinator/Supervisor certification (desirable)
