Senior Design Manager – Main Contractor (DfE Projects)
Location: London
Salary: Competitive + Package
Contract Type: Permanent
We’re looking for an experienced Design Manager to join our growing team and lead the delivery of high‑quality education projects across the UK. As a Tier 1 main contractor with a strong pipeline of DfE-funded schools , we’re seeking someone who understands the unique demands, standards, and compliance requirements of the Department for Education.
The Role
You’ll take ownership of the design process from pre‑construction through to handover, ensuring that all design information is fully coordinated, buildable, and aligned with DfE frameworks. Working closely with internal teams, consultants, and stakeholders, you’ll drive design excellence and ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to the highest technical standards.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the design process across multiple DfE school projects
Coordinate design information between architects, engineers, and specialist consultants
Ensure compliance with DfE Output Specifications, BIM requirements, and technical standards
Support bid teams during tender stage, including design strategy and value engineering
Manage design risk, buildability reviews, and technical queries
Work collaboratively with project managers, commercial teams, and site teams
Maintain strong relationships with clients, local authorities, and external partners
About You
Proven experience as a Design Manager within a main contractor environment
Strong track record delivering DfE / education sector projects
Excellent understanding of DfE Output Specs, MMC, and BIM Level 2
Ability to lead multidisciplinary design teams and manage complex design packages
Strong communication, coordination, and problem‑solving skills
Proactive, detail‑driven, and confident working in a fast‑paced environment
