Job Description
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, and forward‑thinking Consultant Stroke Physician to join their friendly and high‑performing stroke team.
You will become part of a well‑established service of 8 Consultant Stroke Physicians and 4 Specialist Doctors, working together to deliver high‑quality, patient‑centred stroke care across Somerset.

Main Duties of the Role
As a Consultant Stroke Physician, you will play a key role in delivering excellent hyperacute, acute, and rehabilitation stroke care. Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading daily ward rounds on the Hyperacute Stroke Unit
- Supporting 24/7 thrombolysis and collaborating with the AGWS telemedicine network
- Running 7‑day rapid access TIA clinics (based at Musgrove Park Hospital)
- Caring for stroke patients at Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital
- Contributing to stroke rehabilitation and Early Supported Discharge pathways
- Providing clinical supervision and teaching to junior doctors and medical students
- Participating in the 1 in 8 weekend HASU on‑call rota

Job Responsibilities & Job Plan
- 10 PAs total: 8.5 Direct Clinical Care + 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities
- Additional SPA time may be available for research, leadership, or service development
- Final job plan will be agreed with the successful candidate
Qualifications
Essential
- MRCP or equivalent
- Full GMC registration with valid licence to practise
- Strong experience in acute stroke, thrombolysis, TIA management & stroke rehabilitation
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Desirable
- Entry on the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT)
- Higher research degree
- Evidence of teaching, leadership, audit, and management experience
- Involvement in stroke research or quality improvement
