sickness cover. OVERVIEW:
Our client is seeking an experienced, steady, and hands-on Transport Manager to support a busy distribution operation in Barking, covering a long-term sickness absence.This is a high-volume, multi-drop environment (c.44 routes, with up to 45 drops per van), delivering stationery, paper products, and office supplies to a range of customers including offices, prisons, hotels, shops, and MOD offices. Delivery areas are mainly Central London, with routes extending up to Southend. The transport department sits within a branch of around 60 staff, incorporating drivers, warehouse operations, and administration. A Transport Supervisor is currently holding things together and needs an experienced Transport Manager to restore structure, compliance, and consistent performance. CPC is not required for this position. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operational leadership and stability
Take ownership of day-to-day transport operations and quickly bring structure, consistency, and calm to the function.
Support and guide the Transport Supervisor, providing clear direction and a practical coaching approach.
Liaise closely with warehouse and administration teams to ensure smooth inbound unloading, daytime staging, and early-morning vehicle loading. Planning and performance
Oversee route planning and daily execution across c.44 routes, ensuring safe, efficient, and on-time delivery performance.
Monitor and improve operational metrics (service levels, failed deliveries, damages, driver performance, vehicle downtime).
Ensure effective use of transport systems, POD processes, telematics / geo-cards, and general fleet controls. Compliance, safety, and risk management
Ensure robust driver compliance, including licence checks, induction / refresher processes, and ongoing performance management.
Manage vehicle compliance standards, including daily walk-round checks, defect reporting, repairs, and maintenance coordination.
Deal confidently with DVLA matters, RTIs, incidents, and any driver-related issues involving police or other authorities.
Maintain a strong Health & Safety culture across transport activity, ensuring procedures are followed and recorded correctly. STAKEHOLDER MANAGEMENT:
Work collaboratively with site leadership and wider operations to ensure transport activity supports overall branch performance.
Communicate clearly with internal teams to resolve operational issues quickly and prevent repeat issues. ROLE REQUIREMENTS;
Essential
Proven experience managing transport operations within a high-volume, multi-drop environment.
Confident managing drivers and transport teams, with the maturity to take control of a pressured operation and set clear standards.
Strong working knowledge of driver and vehicle compliance, including daily checks, defect management, and incident handling.
Able to work at pace, prioritise effectively, and make sound decisions under pressure. Strong communication skills, with the ability to steady a team and improve behaviours and outcomes quickly.
Comfortable working closely with warehouse and admin teams to coordinate loading, dispatch, and delivery activity.
Desirable
Background from courier / parcel or high-drop distribution environments (e.g., EVRi, DPD, UPS or similar).
Experience overseeing mixed fleets including vans and Class 2 vehicles (CPC not required for this role). TPBN1_UKTJ
