About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Adult Consultant Psychiatrist to join our clinical team and provide expert psychiatric care in either specialized rehabilitation services or acute psychiatric wards. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in assessing, diagnosing, and treating adult patients with complex mental health needs, while working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team (MDT).

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-level psychiatric input to adult inpatients within rehabilitation or acute settings.
  • Work effectively within an MDT to deliver holistic, patient-centered care.
  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments and create personalized treatment plans.
  • Ensure compliance with the Mental Health Act 1983 and other relevant legislation.
  • Supervise junior doctors and trainees, supporting their clinical development and adherence to best practices.
  • Participate in internal audits, clinical governance meetings, and departmental initiatives.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of clinical protocols and service improvements.
  • Maintain professional development through regular appraisals and CPD to sustain GMC registration.


Essential Qualifications

  • Full GMC registration with license to practice.
  • Recognized medical degree (e.g., MBBS, MBChB).
  • MRCPsych or equivalent qualification.
  • Section 12(2) approval and Approved Clinician (AC) status.
  • CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) in one of the following:
  • General Adult Psychiatry
  • Forensic Psychiatry
  • Psychiatry of Learning Disabilities (LD)
  • Medical Psychotherapy
  • Desired Experience

    • Minimum 8 years of experience in adult psychiatry, preferably within NHS or private mental health settings.
    • Proven leadership in multidisciplinary clinical settings.
    • Experience in providing care for patients with complex and long-term psychiatric conditions.
    • Previous experience mentoring junior medical staff or psychiatry trainees.


    Training Pathway (for context)

    • Core Psychiatry Training (CT1–CT3): 3 years full-time across general adult psychiatry and subspecialties.
    • Higher Specialist Training (ST4–ST6): 3 years in a psychiatry subspecialty, leading to CCT.


    Additional Details

    • Location: Ideally based near the hospital site. A relocation package is available for eligible candidates across the UK or Ireland.
    • Travel: Minimal, role is primarily onsite.
    • Hours: 36–42 hours/week, depending on role allocation and clinical needs.
