Applications & Systems Engineer Location: Northumberland

A leading global manufacturer of innovative vehicle occupant safety products is seeking an Applications & Systems Engineer to join its UK operations team. The organisation is recognised worldwide for engineering excellence and provides safety-critical systems to major automotive clients.
This multi-disciplined role is based at the company's Morpeth manufacturing facility, with occasional overseas travel to support customer projects, product validation, and supplier engagement.
The Role The Applications & Systems Engineer will act as the primary technical interface between customers, internal departments, and global engineering teams. The postholder will play a vital role in developing, validating, and supporting the delivery of advanced safety restraint systems and associated components.
The successful candidate will work cross-functionally to provide cost-effective engineered solutions while supporting product development, quality systems, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives across the site.
Key Responsibilities Product Engineering & Development Develop and release safety restraint systems and related products to meet technical, cost, and timing requirements.
Provide customers with innovative, value-adding engineering solutions.
Support full product validation in collaboration with internal engineering teams, test facilities, and external partners.
Quality & Process Management Coordinate internal and external audits (ISO9001, ISO14001, VDA 6.3 preferred).
Oversee calibration, goods receiving processes, customer concerns (8D, PCA), MSA, SPC, and Poke-Yoke activities.
Manage Supplier and Customer PPAP, APQP documentation, and Conformity of Production requirements.
Maintain site accreditations, certifications, and compliance documentation.
Operational & Cross-Functional Support Support manufacturing and maintenance teams, including deputising where necessary.
Deliver KPIs, performance reporting, and technical documentation.
Assist with supplier identification, materials sourcing, and customer visits/technical presentations.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and robust error-proofing across systems and processes.
Customer & Commercial Engagement Build and maintain strong technical relationships with customers.
Attend UK and international customer visits as required.
Represent the company at trade shows and industry events.
Health & Safety Manage and improve the site Health & Safety Management System, including audits, inspections, and risk assessments.
Ensure all statutory and regulatory requirements relevant to safety-critical products are met.
Qualifications & Experience Essential Degree in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering preferred).
1–5 years' experience in a fast-paced manufacturing or engineering environment.
Strong proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks or equivalent) and 3D printing.
Experience with safety-critical products, APQP, NPI, ISO9001/14001 systems.
Practical hands-on engineering capability.
Excellent communication, problem-solving, and multitasking skills.
Technical Skills Proficient in: SolidWorks or equivalent CAD
MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel
ERP systems (Oracle advantageous)

Knowledge of Lean and Six Sigma tools is beneficial.
