Role Overview
This Associate role is a senior position within the CDM and Principal Designer team, responsible for leading the delivery of high?quality health and safety design risk management services across a broad portfolio of construction projects. The position requires strong leadership, technical expertise in CDM 2015 regulations, and the ability to influence design teams at a strategic level. You will also contribute to the growth and professional development of the CDM service line. The ideal candidate will have practiced within an architectural environment and be comfortable integrating design thinking with safety and compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Principal Designer Duties
Lead the Principal Designer function under CDM 2015 across multiple projects.
Oversee design risk management activities from feasibility through to completion.
Facilitate early design risk workshops and coordinate with multi?disciplinary teams.
Ensure pre?construction information is collated, reviewed, and communicated effectively.
Oversee the preparation, review, and issue of the Health and Safety File.
CDM Advisory Services
Provide expert CDM guidance to clients, project managers, architects, and contractors.
Review design proposals to identify, eliminate, and reduce foreseeable risks.
Undertake site inspections to monitor compliance and progress.
Prepare clear and comprehensive CDM documentation, risk registers, and reports.
Leadership and Client Management
Act as a key client contact and develop long?term relationships with stakeholders.
Support business development, proposal writing, and bid presentations.
Mentor, manage, and support junior CDM professionals and graduates.
Contribute to the strategic development of the CDM and Principal Designer offering.
Project and Team Management
Manage multiple concurrent projects with responsibility for quality, delivery, and profitability.
Coordinate effectively with internal teams working across cost management, project management, and building consultancy.
Champion best practice design safety, innovation, and regulatory compliance.
Skills and Experience Required
Strong architectural background (degree or significant experience in architecture or design?based construction roles).
Demonstrable experience delivering Principal Designer and CDM advisor services.
Excellent working knowledge of CDM 2015 regulations.
Capable of challenging design decisions constructively and influencing project outcomes.
Strong client?facing skills with the ability to communicate complex issues clearly.
Proven leadership or team management experience.
Ability to work full time in a London office environment.
Qualifications (Preferred but not essential)
Degree in Architecture, Architectural Technology, or a related discipline.
Membership of APS, RIBA, CIAT, or equivalent professional body.
NEBOSH Construction Certificate or equivalent health and safety qualification.
Evidence of ongoing CPD within design risk management.
