Associate/Associate/Technical Director Sustainability Consultant – supporting the delivery of sustainable building solutions on high-profile projects and major frameworks as part of a growing national Building Performance Network within the UK Business.

Role Summary

Reporting to a Regional Lead, you will develop the team’s offering across a range of sectors. The role is client‑facing, helping clients understand how to define and fulfil their strategic goals towards net‑zero operational energy, embodied carbon and wider sustainability targets.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the approach for sustainability across significant portfolios and major frameworks.
  • Increase WSP’s profile in the industry, help secure new work and improve the quality and technical knowledge relating to sustainable design.
  • Undertake business development activities including attending B2B meetings with clients and professionals and industry events.
  • Understand and support client briefs in matters of sustainability and translate their aspirations into practicable delivery models.
  • Coordinate sustainability delivery across design teams and stakeholders internally and externally.
  • Identify opportunities for cross‑selling of services and coordinate with WSP experts across other teams.
  • Support the growth of the existing team through recruitment and development of staff.
  • Prepare high‑quality reports that clearly and concisely communicate issues and conclusions.
  • Understand and apply the range of current and proposed UK sustainability‑related legislation to project solutions at all levels of governance.

Qualifications

  • Degree in engineering, environmental, architectural or sustainability‑related subject.
  • Membership of a related professional institution and on the way to or already “Chartered” as either engineer, scientist or environmentalist.
  • Understanding and experience in Net Zero, low‑carbon design and materials.
  • Experience as a sustainability consultant, leading sustainability assessments.
  • Proven track record of driving design teams to maximise sustainability, including successful delivery of multiple assessments for certification.
  • Knowledge of the construction process and the associated implications of sustainable design.
  • Proven champion of sustainability who has led and encouraged behavioural change throughout the business.
  • Driver of innovation and best practice, with clear communication of benefits to colleagues and clients.
  • Bid support – supported work winning/bidding with business and commercial acumen.
  • Understanding of BREEAM and other environmental assessment methodologies.
  • Understanding of thermal modelling and low‑carbon energy strategies.
  • Awareness of current UK planning policies related to sustainability and Net Zero targets.
  • Effective communication of complex technical information to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Presentation skills and time management.
  • Ability to coordinate and provide training to junior consultants.
  • Must be able to obtain UK vetting level of Security Check (SC).
