Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Physiotherapist to join the Care of Elderly team at Princess Alexandra Hospital. You will be responsible for providing a high standard of assessment, advice, treatment, and evaluation to patients referred to the acute inpatient physiotherapy service, including those with complex physical and psychological conditions. You will support patients across elderly wards as well as the specialist hip fracture ward. You will build on your previous experience to further develop your clinical and managerial skills, working as an autonomous professional in line with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy rules of professional conduct and standards, as well as the Health Professions Council regulations.
Main duties of the job
As a Specialist Physiotherapist, you will manage your own caseload independently and ensure seamless continuity of physiotherapy care during patient transfers or discharge. You will supervise and support junior physiotherapy staff and assistants, as well as contribute to the clinical education of physiotherapy students on placement. You will participate in service improvement initiatives, audits, research projects, and seven-day working as required. Additionally, you will maintain professional registration, adhere to Trust and professional body policies, contribute to departmental training and education sessions, and assist the Specialty Team Lead in coordinating and enhancing physiotherapy services, while advocating for patient safety and excellent care.

Job Roles & Responsibilities
* To conduct comprehensive assessments and use advanced clinical reasoning to formulate diagnoses, prognoses, and personalised treatment goals for patients with complex conditions.
* To select, implement, and adapt specialised physiotherapy interventions, including manual techniques, therapeutic handling, electrotherapy, exercise programmes, and use of appliances, ensuring patient safety at all times.
* To maintain accurate, timely, and professional patient records and reports in line with HPC and CSP regulations, reflecting assessment, treatment, and progress.
* To be able to correctly identify inappropriate referrals to Physiotherapy and have the confidence to refer on or back as required.
* To manage and prioritise a challenging caseload independently, including providing emergency assessment and treatment for critically ill inpatients and participating in on-call, weekend, and 7-day service duties.
* To contribute to departmental projects and patient education initiatives, supporting improvements in care delivery and enhancing patient experience (e.g., creating informative resources or supporting training activities).
Person Specifications & Qualifications
* Diploma or Degree in Physiotherapy.
* Experience in elderly, orthopaedic, or respiratory care.
* HCPC registration or UK-recognised accreditation.
* Proficient in Moving & Handling, BLS, and SystemOne.
* Evidence of CPD and teaching experience.
