Battery Engineer

New Today

We're supporting our customer based in Coventry in recruiting an experienced Battery Engineer to join their team on a maternity‑cover contract. This role is ideal for a technically strong engineer with deep expertise in battery systems, thermal management, and test operations-someone who thrives in a fast‑paced, problem‑solving environment and can work independently while guiding junior team members.

As a Battery Engineer , you will be accountable for the design, validation, and optimisation of battery packs and associated systems. This includes modules, upper and lower shells, HV & LV harnesses, the BDU, and all thermal management schemes-including detailed water‑cooled pipeline design.

You will support battery structural design evaluations, daily functional and lifecycle testing, and lead the analysis around capacity, cycle life, and failure modes. The role also includes delivering thermal simulations, theoretical calculations, and practical testing to ensure robust, vehicle‑ready battery performance.

You will work with high autonomy, manage key processes, and provide coaching to lower‑level engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead system design and validation for full battery pack architecture.
Evaluate design performance and oversee daily testing (charge/discharge, cycle life, failure analysis).
Design and optimise battery thermal management strategies.
Conduct thermal modelling, simulation, and analysis.
Model battery performance, efficiency, and service life.
Independently manage projects and processes with limited supervision.
Coach and review the work of junior engineers.

Essential Skills & Experience:
Strong technical expertise in test facility operations and system preparation.
Significant hands-on experience with data acquisition, control systems, and automated test programming.
Skilled in data analysis and interpreting test outputs.
A natural problem solver with a structured, analytical approach.
Knowledge of Health & Safety, Risk Assessments, COSHH, SDS.
Ability to validate, interpret, and prepare engineering documentation.
Competent in Microsoft Office for reports, plans, and presentations.
Full UK Driving Licence (max 6 points, no disqualifications).
Desirable Skills

Knowledge of HV powertrain systems and energy storage technologies.
Experience with battery test automation systems (e.g., Maccor, Arbin, AVL Lynx).
Familiarity with CAN communication tools (e.g. Vector CANoe/CANape).
Understanding of Lithium‑ion battery technology.
Experience with structured problem-solving methods.
Knowledge of standards: TS16949, ISO9001, ISO17025.
Understanding of instrument calibration processes.
Ability to apply programming/scripting languages (C/C++, Python, Java, etc.).
Education

Level 4 (RQF) or higher in Systems, Mechanical, Electrical/Electronics Engineering-or equivalent experience.
Degree in Systems, Mechanical, or Electrical/Electronic Engineering preferred
