Civil Senior Design Engineer - Environment
Location: Warrington
What you will be doing
You will be an important member of the Engineering Design Team and will work with the Principal Engineer(s), Design Team, Design Manager(s) and Design Leads to deliver designs to the highest quality, complying with the GT process, BMS, and H&S regulations. The role is technical and engaged directly on projects, requiring competency in technical design delivery in the water and wastewater industry. You may have line‑management responsibility for design engineers in the same discipline, and possibly for non‑discipline design engineers if required.
You will also provide direction and assist with innovations, contribute to the engineering governance of discipline design activities, ensure integration with other discipline production activities, provide technical support to supply‑chain procurement activities, and support site activities as required. You will support the Discipline Manager and Principal Engineer(s) for knowledge sharing and development of discipline engineers, including mentoring early‑career staff.
About the role
Educated to Degree level in Engineering or other equivalent qualifications. Demonstrable experience working within the Municipal Water and Wastewater industries with a variety of clients such as Severn Trent, Scottish Water, Yorkshire Water, United Utilities, Thames Water and Southern Water. Preference for a Chartered Member of a recognised professional Engineering body. Competent in a contracting/consulting environment, with commercial awareness.
Knowledge of Civil design of non‑infrastructure including but not limited to buried and above‑ground gravity and pressurised water and wastewater systems, design of inlet works, final effluents, primary, settlement tanks, chambers within WTW and WWTW. Knowledge of current H&S legislation and British Standards and experience in applying them across designs. Experience of working in accordance with QA and H&S procedures. Produce and check calculations and reports to support designs.
Understanding of hydraulics and experience in hydraulic calculations.
Preferable knowledge in structural design of below and above ground water retaining structures and RC detailing, but not essential.
Experience liaising with clients on technical matters to understand their needs and develop solutions.
Attendance at design, progress and site meetings as required.
Awareness of NEC contracts.
Competent with the company's Integrated Management System including Health & Safety, Environmental and other relevant regulations.
Strong written and oral communication and organisational skills and ability to produce reports in clear concise English.
Proven ability to lead and work within a team environment with a dedicated approach to meet project deadlines.
Keep up to date with industry best practice and identify innovation/best practice for consideration.
Co‑ordinate and liaise with suppliers, specialist sub‑contractors, in‑house functions and construction teams.
Understanding of design activity schedules and estimates.
Proficient in working with multi‑disciplinary teams.
Supervise and mentor less experienced or junior engineers.
