Job Description
Modus Careers is partnering with a structural steel contractor entering an exciting new chapter. With over a dozen live projects, many of them upwards of £10m and a pipeline stretching confidently into 2026, the business has never been stronger.
They’ve recently bolstered their senior operational leadership, and now the focus turns to commercial strength. The hire of a Commercial Manager is pivotal: someone who can take ownership of major steel projects, elevate commercial rigour, and help steer the company into its next stage of growth.
This is not a role for someone looking to coast. It’s for a commercially sharp leader with experience in large-scale structural steel, a deep understanding of JCT and NEC contracts, and the appetite to bring genuine direction. You’ll be the person who ensures projects are not only delivered but delivered profitably, balancing the detail with the bigger picture.
Your week will be split between site-based work in London (around three days), flexible working for the rest, and time at the company’s Haverhill HQ when needed. In return, the package is open—reflecting both your experience and the company’s ambition to attract the right person.
Key Responsibilities
Take full commercial responsibility for large-scale structural steel projects from inception through to final account
Prepare, manage and negotiate budgets, forecasts and cost plans to maximise profitability
Administer JCT & NEC contracts, including valuations, variations, change control and dispute resolution
Oversee subcontractor procurement, tendering and applications for payment, ensuring robust but fair terms
Deliver accurate cost reporting, cash flow forecasts and monthly valuations to senior leadership
Partner with project managers and site teams to monitor progress, assess risks and identify cost-saving opportunities
Build strong relationships with clients, consultants and supply chain partners, maintaining a reputation for collaboration
What’s on Offer
A key leadership role in a business entering a new phase of growth
Opportunity to shape commercial strategy on £10m+ structural steel projects
Flexible working, with three days site-based in London and two days split between HQ in Haverhill and remote
Extremely competitive package, open depending on experience and impact
The chance to make a lasting commercial mark on one of the UK’s most ambitious steel contractors
This is a chance to join a business with real momentum. The kind of environment where your expertise will make a visible, lasting impact, and where commercial leadership will shape the future of the company as much as its engineering does.
