Community Cancer Champions Engagement Lead

The Community Cancer Champions Engagement Lead will deliver and scale a countywide volunteer-led programme that improves cancer awareness, screening uptake and early diagnosis across Worcestershires communities.
The postholder will recruit, train and support up to 180 Community Cancer Champions, prioritising underserved communities, working as part of a team in Community Power. The role combines coordination, community engagement, and hands-on delivery, ensuring the programme achieves measurable impact and leaves a sustainable legacy.
Key Responsibilities
1. Programme Mobilisation & Governance (Month 1)
Work with Worcestershire Engagement Lead on mobilisation
Learn the cancer champion training framework from Herefordshire team
Build strong relationships with partners and VCSE organisations.
2. Community Engagement & Champion Recruitment (month 2-3, ongoing)
Lead recruitment of Community Cancer Champions, with a focus on inclusion and lived experience
Work with councils, PCNs, faith groups and community organisations to identify trusted local leaders
Deliver targeted recruitment campaigns in priority areas
3. Training & Champion Activation (month 4-5, rolling)
Work with Worcestershire engagement lead to adapt and deliver training using existing Cancer Champion resources
Organise and facilitate multiple training cohorts (in-person and/or hybrid)
Work with Worcestershire engagement lead to produce and distribute Champion toolkits (digital and print)
Establish peer learning, regular check-ins and ongoing support structures
4. Programme Delivery & Scale-Up (month 6-9)
Support Champions to deliver community-based engagement activities
Manage expenses, micro-grants and practical support for volunteers
Strengthen links with screening teams, PCNs and local campaigns
Monitor activity levels, reach and emerging insight
Report monthly progress to Worcestershire engagement lead for wider reporting
5. Consolidation, Learning & Sustainability (month 10-12)
Coordinate countywide outreach aligned to screening campaigns
Capture case studies, community insight and Champion stories
Organise peer learning and recognition events
Work with Worcestershire engagement lead on sustainability planning with partners (ICB, PCNs, Public Health, VCSE)
Work with Worcestershire engagement lead to produce final evaluation report and handover materials
Key Outcomes
Up to 180 trained and active Community Cancer Champions
200+ community engagement activities delivered
10,000+ residents reached with cancer awareness and screening messages
Clear evidence of impact, learning and system value
A sustainable Champion model embedded locally
Person Specification
Essential
Experience of community engagement, public health, VCSE or volunteer programmes
Proven ability to recruit, motivate and support volunteers
Strong stakeholder management and partnership-working skills
Confident facilitator and communicator with diverse audiences
Excellent organisational and project management skills
Understanding of health inequalities and community-led approaches
Ability to work flexibly, including occasional evenings/weekends
Desirable
Experience working with cancer, screening or prevention programmes
Knowledge of Worcestershire communities and systems
Experience of monitoring, evaluation and impact reporting
Lived experience or strong connection to underserved communities

Please note that this role is 0.8 FTE (4 days per week) FTE salary is £28,000 Flexible working considered (some evenings/weekends required)
