Complex Support Worker (Neuro-disability / Brain Injury)

Supporting an adolescent with complex neuro-disability following a birth-related brain injury.

Role purpose To provide consistent, skilled, and therapeutic support to a young person with complex physical, cognitive, emotional, and social needs arising from a brain injury and cerebral palsy. The role focuses on promoting safety, emotional regulation, independence, and meaningful participation in the community.

Essential skills and experience Experience supporting individuals with brain injury, cerebral palsy, neuro-disability, autism, or learning difficulties. Ability to remain calm when managing emotional dysregulation, with strong communication and observation skills. A patient, consistent, and emotionally attuned approach is essential, alongside an understanding of safeguarding, risk management, and working within structured support plans.

Desirable experience Experience working with adolescents or young adults, with an understanding of executive functioning and sensory processing differences. Experience supporting transition to adulthood and confidence working as part of a multidisciplinary team is desirable.

Personal attributes Calm, reliable, and predictable in approach. Empathetic, emotionally resilient, flexible, and non-confrontational. Able to build trust and rapport and comfortable working in family homes and community settings.

Key responsibilities Provide close supervision at home and in the community, supporting safe travel, road awareness, and navigation of busy environments. Offer calm, proactive emotional support during periods of anxiety or distress, using co-regulation strategies and agreed risk management plans. Support task initiation, planning, and organisation using clear structure, repetition, and visual strategies, allowing extra processing time where needed.

Adapt activities in line with fatigue and pain levels, encourage safe movement and pacing, and support engagement in therapeutic activities such as swimming or gym sessions. Use clear, simple communication and reinforce strategies recommended by Speech and Language Therapy, including assistive technology where appropriate. Promote confidence in social situations and support positive community engagement.

Support engagement with specialist education or alternative provision and encourage vocational interests, particularly within food and catering, in a safe and structured way. Promote independence, confidence, and preparation for adulthood while acting as a positive role model outside the parental relationship.

Work collaboratively with family members, therapists, education providers, and the coordinating professional. Maintain accurate records, share relevant feedback, and uphold confidentiality and professional boundaries at all times
