Job Overview
This is a full time (10 PA) fixed term post for 23 months. We are seeking a Consultant Endocrinologist to join our dynamic team. We currently have 4 full time consultants and 2 less than full time (6.2 WTE). This is a replacement post. In addition to our consultant team we have 2 Specialist Registrars, 1 Internal Medical Trainee, 1 FY2 trainee, 4 FY1 trainees and a clinical fellow. We are supported by a team of Diabetes and Endocrinology CNS's.
The department covers the full range of diabetes and endocrinology, including:
Antenatal care
Pump therapy and diabetes technology
Multi‑disciplinary transition service for both diabetes and endocrinology
Multi‑disciplinary foot service with one of the lowest amputation rates in the South West
Multi‑disciplinary pituitary disease clinics
Multi‑disciplinary endocrine surgery clinics

The team is well established and believes in a collaborative approach to care, with strong relationships across acute and community sectors in the ICB and wider region. The department is actively involved in multi‑site diabetes trials and increasing research activity.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for an excellent team player, passionate about improving care for diabetes and endocrine patients and willing to embrace / lead new practices. This replacement post follows the previous incumbent who was lead for inpatient diabetes within the department. The successful candidate will work closely with the inpatient diabetes nursing team and develop this service, having the time, resources and support to do so. Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
The holder will be a Consultant with CCT in Diabetes and Endocrinology or within 6 months of achieving CCT. The post is based at the RUH with off‑site work at community hospitals. Duties include outpatient diabetes and endocrine clinics, foot clinics, community diabetes clinics at hospitals and GP practices (often delivered virtually via MS Teams). On average each clinic involves seeing 10–12 patients, though some are telephone‑only.
There is an opportunity to undertake educational supervision of junior doctors.
The inpatient General Internal Medicine component involves covering a 28‑bed diabetes ward and occasional medical outliers (maximum 1–2 patients). Current ward commitment is a 1‑week block every 6 weeks per consultant. The post includes GIM on‑call duties; the on‑call commitment is 1 in 24 at category B. Evening ward rounds occur between 5 & 8 pm. The consultant is on call from home and must be available for telephone advice 8 pm–8 am, with occasional on‑site reviews. Weekend on‑call is present in hospital 8 am–8 pm, then from home 8 pm–8 am. Weekend shifts are 1 in 24 with time off in lieu. No routine weekend ward work at present, but consideration can be given for time off in lieu of additional work.
Person specification
Qualifications
MBBS or equivalent
Specialist Accreditation or CSST or equivalent in DM and Endocrinology and GIM
Clinical Experience
UK CCT in diabetes and endocrinology
At least 3 years at Specialist Registrar / Senior Registrar grade with experience in majority of diabetes / endocrinology subspecialties
Teaching Experience
Evidence of support and supervision of foundation and IMT doctors
Management and Administrative Experience
Ability to motivate and develop junior medical staff
Desirable criteria
Experience in clinical leadership roles
Experience in service development
Clinical experience (additional)
Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems within the specialty and for unselected emergency GIM admissions/inpatients
