Job Summary
Applications are invited for the Post of Consultant Paediatrician with a special interest in Epilepsy. The Post offers 10 Programmed Activities. South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a passionate consultant paediatrician. The Post is a substantive Post, less than full‑time applications would also be welcomed. The Paediatric Department provides population‑based services across South Tyneside and Sunderland and works very closely with our multidisciplinary teams, special schools and health centres helping to bring services to the community as well as hospital‑based services.

Main Duties
This Post will have a key focus on the care of children with epilepsy. You will also provide services within general paediatrics including contributing to the general paediatric on‑call and safeguarding rota, and will take a lead role (to be agreed upon appointment) depending upon interests and expertise. The department has a strong commitment to service development and teaching and applicants with shared enthusiasm for these areas are encouraged.

Job Description
You will join the existing team of general paediatrician and paediatric neurodisability consultants as well as the wider paediatric team including community paediatricians, specialist nurses, Cared for Health team, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. This Post will complement both general and neuro‑disability paediatric services.

Person Specification
Experience – Essential
Experience of child protection medical examination and compilation of reports.
Demonstrated commitment to working within the speciality.
Appropriate training/experience in area of special interest.
Experience working with Cared for Health and CYP in need of permanence.
Experience – Desirable
Six months of tertiary neurology/neurodisability training managing patients with epilepsy.
Seeing patients on a regular basis with epilepsy (e.g. weekly clinic).
MDT experience managing patients with complex needs and epilepsy.
Qualifications – Essential
Primary medical qualification.
Full GMC registration.
Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility within six months of interview.
CCT or equivalent in Paediatrics.
Subspecialty training in Community Child Health, neurodisability or equivalent training.
Qualifications – Desirable
Specialist interest to support the Department.
SPIN in Epilepsy.
Completed PET courses 1, 2 and 3.
Management & Administrative Experience – Essential
Understanding of the NHS, clinical governance and resource issues.
Evidence of organisational, management and time‑management skills.

Evidence of management and administration experience and understanding of management goals.
Management course and/or certificate.

Participation in National Epilepsy 12 Audit data collection.
Teaching & Education – Essential
Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
Experience participating in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Ability to teach clinical, technical and practical skills.

Qualification in medical education.
