Consultant Ophthalmologist - specialist in Medical Retina
We are looking to appoint an innovative and high performing Substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Medical Retina, providing sub-specialty out-patient clinics and oversee a non-medical injection service.
The medical retina service continues to transform and initiate new models and pathways of care to meet the needs of the local population by implementing best practice.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic and forward thinking eye care service team comprising 22 Consultants, 10 Specialty and Trust Grade Doctors, 4 Specialty trainees, 2 Nurse Practitioners, 10 Orthoptists, 5 Optometrists, 2 ACPs and a substantial team of Ophthalmic Nurses, technicians and healthcare assistants.
The department also benefits from our Eye Clinic Liaison Officer and 6 Ophthalmology Failsafe Co-ordinators (with a dedicated Medical Retina Failsafe) along with a supportive senior management team within the Head and Neck Directorate.
Main duties of the job
To provide specialist Consultant Led out-patient medical retina clinics:
Macular
RVO
DMO
Stable macular virtual clinics
Support sub-speciality clinics where appropriate
Support Emergency clinics where appropriate
To provide teaching and education to trainees, Trust doctors, Optometrists, Orthoptists, Nurse practitioners to enhance future models of care and expansion within the specialty.
Opportunity to work with service leads to conduct service improvement, transformation and research.
Opportunity to provide emergency on-call and cataract surgery depending on experience.

CHFT has 2 main sites, Ophthalmology being based in Acre Mills Out-patients, Huddersfield and Calderdale Royal Hospital, Halifax.
The Trust is currently one of the most digitised NHS Trusts in the country having moved to Cerner Millennium Electronic Patient Records (EPR) in 2017. This makes us currently one of the most paper-light and digitised Ophthalmology Departments in the country including the use of Medisight by all clinical teams, and our planned/on-going work will make us a national leader in this area.

Person Specification
Qualifications
MRCOphth or FRCOphth or equivalent
Applicants must be Registered with the General Medical Council and hold a Licence to Practise
Experience and Achievements
Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Ophthalmology
Evidence of extensive experience and training in assessing and treating patients in General Ophthalmology / on-call settings and MR sub-specialties
Evidence of experience in planning and / or managing MR services including injection service
Understanding current issues within Ophthalmology and the future direction of the specialty
Attendance at a recognised management course
Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions
Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Ophthalmology
Teaching and training
Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff.
Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications
Training in clinical and educational supervision
Attendance at a teaching course
Formal qualification in teaching/education
Audit and Research
Knowledge of Audit principles and evidence of participation in and completion of audit projects
Critical Appraisal Skills
Evidence of knowledge of research methodology
Good communication and empathy skills with patients
