Consultant Ophthalmologist


Location: Bristol


Full Time Permanent Position

They have an opening for a full-time permanent Consultant Ophthalmologist to be based in the Bristol area hospital. This hospital facility is bright, modern and clean with state-of-the-art equipment and technology to provide world class eye care. The Ophthalmology centre is able to undertake diagnosis and treatment in a single visit and undertakes a wide range and breadth of ophthalmological treatments to include cataracts and glaucoma treatment, oculoplastics, ptosis, blepharoplasties and can provide physical retina services to ensure patients have great eye care.



The Role of Consultant Ophthalmologist


Reporting into the Medical Director, you will: -


  • Perform a range of Ophthalmology procedures on patients working in accordance with treatment centre protocols and working practices.
  • Be required to demonstrate a high level of skill in the operative and non-operative aspects of the management and assessment of the following areas: -
  • Slit-Lamp examination
  • Gonioscopy
  • Fundoscopy
  • Refraction
  • Focimeter
  • YAG laser Capsulotomy and Iridotomy
  • Biometry, including Immersion Ultrasound
  • Syringing of the Nasolacrimal Duct
  • Insertion of punctal plugs
  • Corneal and eyelid suture removal
  • Use of bandage contact lens


The post holder will be required to demonstrate a high level of operative skill in the following areas: -

  • High Volume Phacoemulsification under topical anaesthesia (essential)
  • Eyelid surgery
  • Laser treatment


Our Client is exploring the possibility of commencing Medical Retina/Glaucoma Services.


Duties will include preoperative, and postoperative activities as well as time allocated for clinical supporting work.



The person we are looking for will be: -


  • An expert Consultant Ophthalmologist familiar with the procedures identified above independently.
  • Must have a UK registerable Medical Degree
  • MRCOphth/FRCOphth/FRCS
  • Past record of academic achievement
  • Full and Specialist GMC registration in Ophthalmology
  • Wide training and experience in general Ophthalmology
  • Able to offer clinical opinion on a range of problems within Ophthalmology
  • Experience of high volume Cataract surgery under topical anaesthesia
  • Understanding of clinical governance
  • Evidence of clinical outcomes
