Job Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to be the consultant psychiatrist for the Anxiety Disorders Residential Unit (ADRU). The role involves working alongside the established team to reduce symptoms of anxiety disorders and improve patients' functioning and quality of life. The post holder also has one session a week with the Centre for Anxiety and Trauma (CADAT), an outpatient service offering CBT locally and nationally for specific anxiety disorders and depersonalisation disorders. The consultant provides advice to the team, attends complex case meetings, monthly interagency meetings, and supervises the ST doctor.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Provide intensive and expert assessment, risk assessment, and management of patients with complex treatment‑refractory anxiety disorders at the Anxiety Disorders Residential Unit (ADRU).
  • Offer clinical advice and supervision at the Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma.
  • Provide medical leadership on the ward, ensuring safe and timely service provision for service users.
  • Contribute to business planning and service development, including liaising with external funding bodies and placement providers concerning admissions and discharges.
  • Supervise junior medical staff, including core and specialist trainees.
  • Participate in postgraduate training and contribute to the educational activities of the Trust.
  • Engage in research activities, collaborate with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), and contribute to the development and dissemination of evidence‑based practices.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent.

Desirable Criteria

  • Other relevant training and experience in psychopharmacology or obsessive compulsive and related disorders.
  • Qualification or higher degree in research, either complete or in progress (PhD or MD) or experience as a Principal Investigator.

Eligibility

Essential Criteria

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment.
  • Evidence for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within six months of gaining award of CCT.
  • Section 12 approved.
  • Approved Clinician status or able to achieve within three months of appointment.

Desirable Criteria

  • Accreditation as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies or demonstration of planned training on an approved course in CBT leading to accreditation.

  • Strong record of delivery of excellent teaching and training (undergraduate and postgraduate).
  • Demonstrated commitment to shared leadership & collaborative working to deliver improvement.
  • Participated in research or service evaluation.
  • Participated in continuous professional development.
  • Has actively participated in clinical audit or quality improvement programmes.

Desirable Criteria

  • Conducted and published research relevant to anxiety disorders.
  • Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service user involvement: awards, prizes, presentations and publications.
  • Has led quality improvement projects or research leading to service change or improved outcomes to patients, or has demonstrated impact of its research.
