There are 8 sessions within Brent CAMHS and 2 sessions within Brent Early Intervention Service (EIS) focusing on 14-18 year olds. This role offers opportunities for teaching and training, and strong links with Imperial College London to develop research interests. Main duties of the job

Brent CAMHS has multiple sub-teams with specialist skills including the Emotional Disorders Team (EDT), Neurodevelopmental Team (NDT), Learning Disability (LD) and Enhanced Treatment Team (ETT). The post is 10 PAs divided between 8 PAs for the ETT and 2 PAs in the Brent EIS for Psychosis.

The Enhanced Treatment team provides assessment and treatment pathways for children and young people with severe attachment difficulties, emerging personality disorders and high comorbidity. The Brent EIS provides assessment and treatment for people over 14 years with first onset psychosis, including embedded CAMHS psychiatry resource for 14-18 year olds.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

Clinical Work

  • Work with MDT colleagues to develop the Enhanced Treatment sub-team, offer consultation, collaborate with local authority and education, assess and manage children, young people and their families as appropriate.
  • Provide a generic service for non-urgent psychiatric assessments and treatment, including direct clinical involvement and supervision of cases held by other clinicians.
  • Provide a service to acutely mentally ill children and adolescents in crisis, with comprehensive assessments and evidence-based interventions across models and treatments.
  • Consult with MDT regarding urgent assessments and risk management.
  • Assess approximately 15-20 new cases per year and conduct 10-12 face-to-face contacts per week.
  • Maintain a caseload of about 30-40 cases in the CAMHS ETT, with high clinical complexity; consult with team and attend clinical reviews as appropriate.
  • In Brent EIS, manage around 10-15 young people aged 14-18; provide clinical leadership to care coordinators and conduct psychiatric reviews; contribute CAMHS perspective to service operations.
  • Access Tier 4 provision as clinically appropriate and review inpatient care to ensure efficient use of resources.

Clinical leadership and management duties

  • Participate in development of new service models to improve delivery and outcomes, considering commissioner input and best practice evidence.
  • Provide clinical leadership within the Brent Enhanced Treatment team.
  • Contribute to development of clinical protocols as required.
  • Contribute to the Brent CAMHS senior management group and CAMHS-ED service line leadership activities.

Teaching, training and supervision

  • Supervise and train junior doctors, medical students, and other MDT members as required. There is one CT and one FY2 attached to Brent CAMHS supervised by other consultants.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Primary Medical Degree
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Section 12 MHA Approved
  • Approved Clinician status or within 3 months of appointment
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register or CCT expected within 6 months of interview date

Desirable criteria

  • Additional post-graduate qualification relevant to working with children and adolescents
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or equivalent (or CCT expected within 6 months of interview date)

Experience, Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria

  • Competence in psychopharmacology and non-medication therapies
  • Experience in assessment and management of children and young people with complex mental health needs and high risk
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance/Care Quality
  • Ability to participate in Medical Audit and Quality Assurance
  • Experience in teaching and supervision of junior staff and other disciplines
