We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our team as a Consultant Social Worker & AMHP Lead to join our Community Mental Health Teams. This is a senior hybrid role offering the chance to lead advanced social work practice, provide specialist MHA expertise, and oversee the delivery and governance of NPT’s AMHP service. You will play a pivotal role in strengthening statutory MHA practice, supporting staff development, influencing system improvement, and ensuring high‑quality, person‑centred responses for people with complex mental health needs. As a Consultant Social Worker & AMHP Lead, you will provide strategic leadership, expert clinical consultation, and statutory oversight of the AMHP service. Your daily routine will consist of:
Providing advanced consultation on MHA/MCA, safeguarding, risk, and complex cases. Leading reflective practice, complex case reviews and debriefs. Supporting professional development, supervision and capability building. Contributing to service redesign and shaping the strategic direction of social work within CMHTs. Overseeing, coordinating and ensuring safe delivery of the AMHP rota. Screening and prioritising MHA requests, and providing senior escalation and decision support. Ensuring statutory compliance, high‑quality legal documentation and governance oversight. Chairing AMHP forums, leading training and overseeing AMHP recruitment, authorisation and re‑approval cycles.
Maintaining strong partnerships with crisis services, inpatient settings, police and MDT partners play a pivotal role in strengthening statutory MHA practice, supporting staff development, influencing system improvement, and ensuring high‑quality, person‑centred responses for people with complex mental health needs. Based within the North Community Mental Health Team (CMHT), Tonna hospital, Tonna Uchaf, Tonna, Neath SA11 3LX and South CMHT, Forge centre, Forge Road, Port Talbot SA13 1PA. The post is across both Teams. About what this role offers you:

We would welcome those with the qualifications and experience in the following roles:
A Social Work qualification and registration with Social Care Wales. AMHP qualification and substantial post‑qualifying experience in mental health. Strong legal literacy (MHA, MCA, SSWBA, Human Rights). Ability to lead, influence and support staff at all levels. Experience in complex casework, MHA assessments, safeguarding and MDT collaboration.
