Customer Service Officer (Council Tax) – Scale 6 Hackney, London | Hybrid Working | Contract until 27 Nov 2026

The Opportunity

Austin Dean Recruitment is currently working in partnership with the London Borough of Hackney to appoint an experienced Customer Service Officer (Council Tax) to join their busy Customer Services team.

This role is Council Tax–focused and ideal for candidates with strong technical knowledge, excellent customer service skills, and hands-on experience using Academy and Comino systems.

Grade: Scale 6

*

Hours: Monday to Friday | 8:50am – 5:00pm

*

Working Model: Hybrid (minimum 2 days per week in the office)

*

Location: Hackney Service Centre & other Hackney offices as required

Key Responsibilities

*

Act as the first point of contact for residents regarding Council Tax enquiries

*

Maintain and update the Council Tax register, including liable parties, discounts, exemptions, and reliefs

*

Calculate, issue, and amend Council Tax bills and statutory notifications

*

Process changes in circumstances such as house moves, tenancy changes, and property status updates

*

Assess and apply discounts and exemptions (e.g. single person discount, student exemptions)

*

Negotiate sustainable payment arrangements with customers experiencing financial difficulty

*

Take debit/credit card payments where required

*

Accurately log all actions, enquiries, and correspondence on council systems

*

Work closely with internal teams including Housing Benefits, VOA, and Legal Services

Essential Requirements (Mandatory)

✔ Proven, in-depth Council Tax experience within a local authority ✔ Strong knowledge of Council Tax legislation and enforcement processes ✔ Recent hands-on experience using Academy and Comino systems ✔ Excellent communication skills with the ability to handle complex and sensitive enquiries ✔ Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment

Candidates without Academy and Comino experience will not be considered.
