Godalming Town Council is seeking a committed and capable deputy chief officer to take a senior leadership role, supporting the chief executive officer and overseeing key areas of council activity. This is a dynamic and rewarding post that offers strategic influence and day-to-day operational responsibility within a progressive and well-established town council.

As deputy chief officer, youll deputise for the chief officer and lead on:

1. Human Resources - including recruitment, staff development, policy compliance, and workforce planning.
2. Environment & Planning - lead officer for the Environment & Planning Committee, support delivery of the councils climate action plan, and liaise on planning applications and local development frameworks.
3. Staff Management - line manager for the support services executive and communications & community officer, supporting a high-performing team culture.
4. Governance & Compliance - ensure good governance and adherence to council policies and procedures.
5. Project Delivery lead improvement projects, sustainability initiatives, and corporate priorities.

Were looking for a candidate with:

1. Certificate in Local Council Administration (CiLCA) essential (or achieved within 12 months of employment)
2. HR experience in a public or voluntary sector setting.
3. Knowledge of UK planning systems, sustainability frameworks and local council operations.
4. Confidence in preparing committee papers, attending public meetings and supporting elected members.
5. A strong sense of professionalism, discretion, and public service.

Experience in a clerking, deputy or senior officer role in local government will be highly advantageous.
