Job Overview

The Deputy Medical Director will assist the Medical Director in providing professional leadership and support to the Medical and Dental workforce within NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership. They will play a fundamental role in providing expert clinical advice to the Single Lead Employer of each training programme and be pivotal in delivering key programmes across NHS Wales.

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist the Medical Director in delivering his/her office portfolio.
  • Provide professional medical leadership across NWSSP, especially regarding expert clinical advice for the medical and dental workforce under the Single Lead Employer.
  • Support the Medical Examiner Service and the Primary Care Advisory team.
  • Lead strategic and operational decision‑making, including deputising at the Partnership Committee, sub‑committees, Senior Leadership Group and meetings with Welsh Government officers.
  • Deliver key programmes that impact NWSSP and NHS Wales, such as the international recruitment programme, implementation of Speaking Up Safely, and the Duty of Quality.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Medical qualification and Royal College membership (essential).
  • GMC registration.
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of legislation relating to medical practice.

Desirable:

  • Management qualification.
  • Knowledge and experience of the Primary Care sector in NHS Wales.

Experience

  • Senior professional with extensive experience of high‑level leadership and management.
  • Experienced practising clinician with an in‑depth understanding of clinical standards and governance.
  • Successful track record of delivering quality services in large multidisciplinary healthcare environment.

Desirable:

  • Welsh language skills.

Skills and Attributes

  • Highest level of interpersonal, communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to analyse highly complex organisational problems and develop solutions.
  • Ability to relate to a wide spectrum of NHS professionals with competing agendas.
