Deputy Shift Leader – Engineering

Role Overview

The Deputy Shift Leader – Engineering plays a key role in delivering high-quality Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, and emergency response services in line with contractual and operational requirements.

With a primary focus on electrical systems, this position includes acting as a High Voltage (HV) Authorised Person when required, ensuring the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of site electrical infrastructure.

This role combines strong technical expertise with developing leadership capability. You will support the Shift Leader and site management in maintaining operational continuity, strengthening client relationships, and upholding the organisation’s professional standards and reputation.

Key Responsibilities
1. Compliance & Technical Operations

Deliver PPM activities in accordance with maintenance schedules, statutory requirements, and industry best practice

Maintain engineering standards to maximise plant reliability, asset lifespan, and system performance

Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety legislation and site-specific policies

Accurately complete maintenance documentation, reports, and QA records

Respond promptly to reactive electrical tasks and service desk requests

Act as HV Authorised Person when required, following Permit to Work and approved switching procedures

2. Fault Diagnosis & Minor Works

Diagnose, troubleshoot, and rectify faults across electrical distribution systems and associated building services infrastructure

Undertake minor installations, system modifications, and upgrades as required

Maintain and repair lighting systems, distribution boards, and associated components

Support technical surveys and provide material specifications and cost estimates for minor works

3. Coordination & Operational Support

Act as a key point of contact for client maintenance queries, escalating complex issues where appropriate

Supervise subcontractors and specialist vendors, ensuring Safe Systems of Work and high-quality service delivery

Review, implement, and maintain SOPs, RAMS, and electrical switching schedules

Support coordination of engineering resources across nearby sites to maintain operational resilience

Provide leadership support to colleagues, promoting teamwork, accountability, and performance excellence

4. Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

Maintain strict adherence to company and site HSE standards

Ensure correct use and compliance of PPE at all times

Participate in incident reporting, investigations, and corrective actions

Support internal and external HSE audits and compliance reviews

Review and update Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) as required

Actively promote a zero-incident culture and support management-led HSE initiatives

Qualifications & Experience
Essential

Completed Electrical Apprenticeship (or equivalent) within building maintenance or facilities management

City & Guilds 2360 Parts 1 & 2 (Electrical Installation) or equivalent

17th or 18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations certification

Strong working knowledge of electrical and mechanical building services systems

Proven experience in PPM delivery, fault diagnosis, reactive maintenance, and inspection/testing

Sound understanding of Health & Safety legislation and best practice

Strong organisational, communication, and team collaboration skills

Desirable

City & Guilds 2360 Part 3 (or equivalent)

HV Authorised Person status or experience working under Permit to Work systems

Experience within critical environments (e.g., multi-site portfolios, banking, data centres)

Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS)

Working knowledge of UPS systems, emergency power infrastructure, and standby generation

PASMA and/or IPAF certification

Strong IT literacy, including MS Office and CAFM/PPM platforms

Previous supervisory experience or clear ambition to progress into leadership roles

Working Hours

Based on a defined shift pattern aligned to site operational requirements

Flexibility required for shift cover, emergency call-outs, and overtime where necessary

All working hours and overtime arrangements comply with the Working Time Directive
