Job Description

About Urban Skies

Urban Skies is a design‑led fabrication studio specialising in bespoke metalwork for residential and commercial environments. We turn ambitious ideas into beautifully engineered reality — from architectural staircases and balustrades to feature structures, furniture, and one‑off installations.

Our team blends creativity, technical expertise, and hands‑on craftsmanship. Every project is unique, every detail matters, and every client experience is shaped with care. We work closely with architects, designers, contractors, and homeowners to deliver work that is precise, buildable, and visually striking.

As we continue to grow, we’re building a team of people who are curious, collaborative, and excited by the challenge of creating exceptional, design‑driven work.

Role Overview

Urban Skies is seeking a highly capable Project Designer/PM to lead the design and delivery of bespoke metalwork projects across residential and commercial environments. This role blends creative design, technical problem‑solving, and end‑to‑end project management. You’ll work closely with clients, fabricators, architects, and contractors to turn concepts into beautifully engineered, buildable solutions.

This is a manager‑level position suited to someone who thrives in autonomy, can confidently run multiple projects simultaneously, and brings both design rigour and operational discipline.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Technical Development

  • Lead concept development, technical design, and detailing for bespoke metalwork (Brise Soleil, balustrades, screens, Pergola’s, architectural features).
  • Produce high‑quality drawings, models, and specifications suitable for fabrication and installation.
  • Translate client ideas into practical, manufacturable solutions without compromising design intent.
  • Conduct site surveys, measurements, and feasibility assessments.
  • Ensure all designs meet structural, safety, and building regulation requirements.

Project Management

  • Own projects from initial brief through to installation and handover.
  • Develop project scopes, timelines, budgets, and risk assessments.
  • Coordinate with fabricators, installers, suppliers, and subcontractors.
  • Manage procurement of materials and specialist components.
  • Oversee quality control at each stage of fabrication and installation.
  • Maintain clear, proactive communication with clients and stakeholders.
  • Resolve issues on site with calm, solution‑focused leadership.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Lead client meetings, design reviews, and site visits.
  • Provide expert guidance on materials, finishes, engineering constraints, and design options.
  • Build strong, trust‑based relationships with architects, designers, contractors, and end clients.
  • Represent Urban Skies with professionalism and a premium, design‑led approach.

Operational & Commercial

  • Prepare variations, design proposals, and project documentation.
  • Track project costs and ensure profitability.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, templates, and workflows.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement across design, fabrication, and installation practices.

Requirements

Design & Technical Skills

  • 2–5 years in architectural metalwork, bespoke fabrication, industrial design, or related fields.
  • Strong proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor, InDesign, Photoshop).
  • Experience producing fabrication‑ready drawings and technical packs.
  • Understanding of metalworking processes: welding, laser cutting, folding, finishing, powder coating, etc.
  • Ability to design for both aesthetics and manufacturability.

Project Management

  • Proven track record managing bespoke build projects from concept to completion.
  • Experience coordinating multiple trades and suppliers.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to run several projects independently.
  • Confident in managing budgets, timelines, and client expectations.
  • Comfortable leading site meetings and resolving technical issues in real time.

Client-Facing Experience

  • Skilled at translating client briefs into actionable design solutions.
  • Experience working with architects, interior designers, contractors, and high‑end residential clients.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical ideas in a clear, approachable way.
  • Demonstrable commercial awareness across design and project management.

Personal Attributes

  • Self‑driven, organised, and able to operate with minimal supervision.
  • Strong problem‑solver with a calm, pragmatic approach.
  • Detail‑oriented with a passion for craftsmanship and precision.
  • Confident decision‑maker who can balance design ambition with practical constraints.
  • Collaborative, respectful, and able to build strong working relationships.
