Level: Consultant (up to £45,000) / Senior Consultant (up to £60,000) + bonus, benefits, and sign-on bonus
Location: Newcastle (hybrid)
Function: DevOps Engineering
Industry: Public Sector / Large-Scale Digital Transformation
Clearance: Must be eligible for UK Security Clearance
About the Role
Our client is a global technology and consulting firm partnering with public sector organisations to deliver critical digital services. Their Newcastle DevOps practice works alongside client engineering teams rather than traditional consulting delivery, supporting large-scale AWS-based projects such as the Department for Work and Pensions, with previous engagements at the Bank of England and NHS. The team combines deep technical expertise with a collaborative, client-focused approach.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Delivering hands-on DevOps engineering support across AWS (and occasionally Azure) environments.
- Building, maintaining, and automating CI/CD pipelines using GitLab, GitHub Actions, and Jenkins.
- Implementing infrastructure as code using Terraform, CloudFormation, or ARM templates.
- Managing configuration via Ansible (or Puppet/Chef) and automating image building with Packer.
- Deploying and operating containerised applications with Docker/Podman and Kubernetes (EKS/AKS exposure beneficial).
- Monitoring and troubleshooting systems using ELK Stack, Dynatrace, and other observability tools.
- Engaging directly with client technical teams, providing guidance and sharing expertise where required.
- Continuously learning and upskilling, including AI and emerging cloud technologies.
Ideal Background
Engineer:
- 2–5 years’ hands-on DevOps or cloud engineering experience.
- Strong Linux, automation, and cloud fundamentals.
- Comfortable contributing as a technical individual with a growth mindset.
Senior Engineer:
- 5+ years’ experience with strong technical depth.
- Mentoring or supporting peers is valued; formal leadership not required.
- Strong communication skills for client technical discussions.
Core Skills (all levels):
- Cloud: AWS preferred, Azure also valuable.
- CI/CD: GitLab, GitHub Actions, Jenkins.
- IaC: Terraform preferred, CloudFormation or ARM accepted.
- Configuration Management: Ansible preferred.
- Containers & Orchestration: Docker/Podman, Kubernetes (EKS/AKS advantage).
- OS & Scripting: Linux, Bash preferred; PowerShell or Python beneficial.
- Monitoring & Observability: ELK Stack, Dynatrace.
What You’ll Receive
- Competitive salary: Senior roles up to £60k, engineers £44–45k, with 10–15% sign-on bonus and performance bonuses.
- Hybrid working: 3 days in Newcastle office or client site per week, flexible depending on project demands.
- 5 days annual learning allowance with heavy investment in AI and cloud upskilling.
- Strong internal technical community with peer support and knowledge sharing.
- Career progression opportunities with performance reviews twice yearly; high performers can advance within 6–12 months.
Who Should Apply
- Hands-on DevOps engineers with strong Linux and automation skills.
- Comfortable working in collaborative, client-facing environments.
- Interested in continuous technical growth and learning.
- Open to hybrid working in Newcastle and eligible for SC clearance (5 years UK residency, minimal gaps).
Join a technically driven DevOps team delivering critical cloud solutions for major public sector clients, with strong career growth and learning opportunities.
