Job Description
Software Engineer – Controls & Automation (UK-based, travel required)\n Salary: Competitive, depending on experience\n Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent\n\nNEOS Engineering is recruiting on behalf of a leading provider of large-scale turnkey solutions across quarrying, aggregates, and industrial design-and-build sectors. The company designs, builds, and maintains electrical and mechanical systems that drive safe, efficient, and sustainable production, integrating design, project delivery, and site support with a strong focus on innovation and digitalisation.\n\nAs a Electrical Maintenance Engineer, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering control and automation systems across large-scale industrial material handling projects. You will be involved throughout the full project lifecycle—from concept and detailed design to testing, validation, installation, and commissioning.
This role includes PLC programming, SCADA development, hardware integration, and on-site commissioning of complex handling systems including conveyors, feeders, crushers, screens, and loadout systems.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\nSpecify, design, and document automation systems for quarrying and heavy industrial processes throughout the full project lifecycle\n\nDesign and develop PLC and SCADA software architectures from scratch, predominantly using Siemens TIA Portal, WinCC, and associated platforms\n\nProduce high-quality technical documentation, including Functional Design Specifications, Software Design Specifications, I/O lists, and commissioning packs\n\nSupport compliance with company procedures, UK health and safety regulations, and relevant standards (BS7671, UKCA, CE, and machinery safety)\n\nAssist with electrical design risk assessments, control panel design, wiring diagrams, and component selection in line with company and industry standards\n\nConduct factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT) with clients and stakeholders\n\nDeliver on-site commissioning and operator training for new material handling plants\n\nWhat We’re Looking For\n\nDegree or HND in Electrical, Electronic, or Industrial Control Systems Engineering, or equivalent experience\n\nProven experience in PLC programming using IEC (phone number removed) , including Ladder Logic, Function Blocks, and Structured Text\n\nStrong background in Siemens PLCs, SCADA, and HMI systems; experience with GE, Rockwell, or Mitsubishi platforms is an advantage\n\nFamiliarity with control hardware design principles, including hardware specification, BOM, procurement, CAD drawings, and testing\n\nStrong knowledge of industrial communication protocols, such as Profinet, Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, OPC, UA\n\nHands-on experience with testing, commissioning, and optimisation of control systems on live plant\n\nAbility to work closely with customers, suppliers, and colleagues to deliver practical solutions\n\nStrong analytical and problem-solving skills with clear communication style\n\nWillingness to travel to customer sites across the UK and occasional overseas assignments\n\nWhat Will Make You Stand Out\n\nExperience with large-scale material handling processes in quarrying, aggregates, or other heavy industry\n\nAwareness of Operational Technology (OT) cybersecurity and its relevance to modern control systems\n\nKnowledge of functional safety standards including ISO 13849 or IEC 61508\n\nChartered Engineer status, or actively working towards it\n\nExperience integrating OEE data capture and reporting into control architectures\n\nWhy Join?\n\nWork on challenging and innovative industrial automation projects\n\nExposure to cutting-edge PLC, SCADA, and control technologies\n\nOpportunities for career development and professional growth\n\nCollaborative, supportive, and safety-focused working environment\n\nIf you’re a skilled Software Engineer with a passion for controls and automation in industrial plant systems, and are ready for a role combining office-based design with on-site commissioning, apply today through NEOS Engineering and take the next step in your career
