Salary will be determined based on experience and position on the Main Pay Range. The maximum salary is applicable to candidates with substantial teaching experience equivalent to U3.
About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious and passionate English Lead Teacher (SEN) to join a highly supportive and forward-thinking special academy in Barnet. This role is ideal for an experienced teacher ready to step into middle leadership and make a meaningful impact on the lives of young people aged 11–19 with learning disabilities, autism and complex needs.
You will lead the development and delivery of a highly adapted English and communication curriculum, combining excellent classroom practice with one dedicated leadership day per week. Working closely with senior leaders, therapists and support staff, you will play a key role in shaping whole-school literacy, embedding communication-rich learning, and championing inclusive, functional English pathways.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead and deliver an engaging, inclusive English curriculum across KS3–KS5
• Drive improvements in reading, writing, speaking and listening across the school
• Model outstanding SEND teaching practice and support colleagues through coaching and collaboration
• Work closely with speech and language therapists to embed communication strategies
• Develop functional English and accreditation pathways tailored to learners needs
• Promote reading for pleasure and literacy-rich environments
• Contribute to whole-school development through leadership time and curriculum innovation
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
• Strong subject knowledge in English and literacy
• Experience teaching students with SEND, including autism and complex needs
• A proven ability to adapt teaching for diverse communication and sensory needs
• Understanding of EHCPs, person-centred approaches and SEND best practice
• Strong organisational and communication skills
• A collaborative, coaching-focused mindset
You will also bring empathy, resilience and a genuine belief that all students can achieve meaningful progress.
