Environmental Engineer
Location: Bristol or Yeovil (Hybrid - typically 3 days in office, flexibility available)
Rate: £58.00 - £65.00 per hour
Contract Length: 12 months
⏰ Hours: Monday - Friday, 37.5 hours per week
Clearance: BPSS required
Start Date: April 2026
An opportunity has arisen for an Environmental Engineer to join a growing environmental engineering team supporting defence aviation programmes. The team delivers environmental management support across sustainment and engineering programmes, ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, policy and industry standards.
This role will involve working closely with engineering teams to integrate environmental considerations across the lifecycle of complex systems and platforms.
The position can be based in Bristol or Yeovil, with teams operating in both locations and a hybrid working arrangement available.
Key Responsibilities
Support the integration of environmental management considerations within engineering design and development activities
Assist in the development and implementation of environmental management strategies across programmes and projects
Produce key environmental deliverables including:
Environmental Management Plans
Registers of Environmental Standards
Environmental Features Matrices
Environmental Case Reports
Hazardous Materials Reports
Ensure programmes maintain compliance with UK environmental legislation, policy and applicable standards
Support the development of platform sustainability plans and environmental performance objectives
Collaborate with engineering teams, suppliers and stakeholders to ensure environmental evidence supports programme requirements
Support environmental audits and review findings, identifying corrective and preventative actions where required
Assist with the management and flow-down of environmental requirements to suppliers and subcontractors
Support environmental risk identification and mitigation across programme lifecycles
Provide environmental engineering support to system safety activities where required
Essential Skills & Experience
Strong understanding of environmental legislation, policy and regulatory frameworks
Experience in environmental engineering or environmental management, ideally within defence, aerospace or another highly regulated industry
Knowledge of Defence Standard 00-051
Experience producing environmental management documentation and reports
Ability to work collaboratively with engineering teams and multidisciplinary stakeholders
Strong communication and organisational skills
Desirable Experience
Knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
Experience with environmental assessment techniques, including environmental aspects and impact analysis
Environmental auditing experience
Membership of, or working towards membership of, a recognised environmental professional body (e.g. ISEP)
