About the Role
As an Environmental Health Officer or Trading Standards Officer, you will carry out a full range of public protection duties across Wiltshire. This includes environmental health, trading standards, and animal health responsibilities. Youll enforce legislation, conduct inspections, investigate complaints, and provide expert advice to businesses and residents.
You will act as a lead officer in specialist areas, mentor trainees, and represent the council in court as an expert witness when required. This is a varied role that involves working independently, often outside normal office hours, and occasionally in challenging environments.
The role can be based from the following locations:
County Hall, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, BA14 8JN
Monkton Park, Chippenham, Wiltshire, SN15 1ER
Bourne Hill, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP1 3UZ
Key Responsibilities
Enforce environmental health and trading standards legislation.
Conduct inspections of high and medium-risk premises.
Investigate complaints and take appropriate enforcement action.
Lead specialist projects and provide expert advice.
Mentor and train junior officers and apprentices.
Represent the council in legal proceedings and public forums.
About You
Were looking for a qualified professional with:
A BSc/MSc in Environmental Health or Diploma in Trading Standards.
EHORB registration (or working towards it) for food safety inspections.
Excellent knowledge of public protection legislation.
Excellent communication and diplomacy skills.
Ability to work flexibly, including out-of-hours duties.
Membership of a relevant professional body (CIEH, CTSI) and post-qualification experience are desirable.
Additional Information
This role requires a valid UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
You will be part of the councils out-of-hours service.
Enhanced DBS clearance is required for Trading Standards Officers.
The role is politically restricted.
