Full-time or part-time (18.5–37 hours per week)

Rate: Up to £60 p/h (Inside IR35)

Our client is seeking a dynamic and hands-on

Environmental Protection Team Lead

to lead and support a high-performing team delivering a broad range of statutory environmental health services. This is a great opportunity to take on a senior role with real impact – managing day-to-day delivery, mentoring officers, and holding a personal caseload of complex work.

About the Role

The client is looking for someone who can lead from the front, handling team leadership, officer development, and their own investigations. You'll manage service delivery across:

Pollution Control (LAPPC, PPC)

Air Quality and Contaminated Land

Statutory Nuisance Investigations

Private Water Supplies and Smoke Control

Planning & Licensing consultations

You’ll help shape service strategy, resolve high-profile or complex issues, and play a key part in staff training, coaching, and mentoring.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the Environmental Protection team operationally and strategically

Oversee performance, work allocation, training and appraisals

Personally handle complex or contentious cases

Maintain and develop operational standards, compliance and SOPs

Support the Environmental Health Business Manager in budget management and strategic planning

Represent the service internally and externally, including complaints and appeal responses

Support emergency response and out-of-hours services (as required)

Requirements:

Proven experience in environmental protection, with a strong working knowledge of environmental health legislation

Leadership or supervisory experience within local authority or similar setting

Hands-on technical expertise – able to carry and manage your own caseload

Excellent mentoring, coaching, and team development skills

Confident communicator, able to liaise at all levels internally and externally

Member of CIEH or equivalent professional body is desirable
