Client:
We are working with one of the UK’s largest and most recognised M&E Contractors. Their experience ranges from small work contracts circa £500k to major projects in excess of £100m.
Due to continuous growth, our client has secured a number of key project wins and as a result, they are actively looking to bring in an Estimating Director to sit across their SLT team.
Role:
The Estimating Director will lead the pre-construction function for the overall business, taking full responsibility for the quality, accuracy, and commercial strength of all tenders.
Operating as part of the SLT, the role is focused on securing profitable and deliverable work. A key priority is ensuring that projects are not only won but won correctly with a clear understanding on project scope, risk, programme, and delivery constraints etc.
The role requires day-to-day alignment with delivery, commercial, and client teams with a strong emphasis on repeat business, negotiated opportunities, and long-term relationships.
Key Responsibilities
·      Leadership & direction of a team of M&E estimators
·      Set clear expectations & processes around quality, risk and commercial profit.
·      Act as a key member of the senior leadership team, contributing to business planning and growth strategy.
·      Ensuring the Estimating function is structured and resourced appropriately to support current and future workload.
Work Winning & Bid Strategy
·      Take ownership of bid selection and ensuring alignment with the company’s strengths, capacity and risk.
·      Lead the approach to key tenders & clients.
·      Be actively involved in client engagement and help to position the business early in the procurement process on projects key for the business.
·      Support and attend client meetings, presentations and interviews where required.
Estimating & Pre-Construction
·      Oversee the preparation of detailed and accurate cost plans and tender submissions.
·      Review and challenge all major bids prior to submission to clients.
·      Ensure a clear understanding of design, scope gaps and coordination risks.
·      Drive a practical and buildable approach to pricing to reflect delivery.
·      Encourage & coordinate early involvement of delivery teams to validate programmes, risk, onsite delivery & more.
Commercial & Risk Management
·      Maintain a strong focus on margin protection and risk recognition at tender stage.
·      Ensure all bids are aligned with current market conditions and supply chain capacity.
·      Oversee the development of procurement strategies that reflect project-specific challenges.
·      Work closely with commercial teams to ensure continuity between tender and live project management.
Supply Chain & Market Awareness
·      Maintain and develop strong relationships with key subcontractors and suppliers.
·      Ensure competitive and reliable input from the supply chain on all tenders.
·      Keep up to date with market trends, particularly within the London M&E sectors.
Delivery Alignment
·      Work closely with operational teams to ensure a smooth transition from pre-construction to project delivery.
·      Ensure tenders are reflective of how projects will be delivered onsite.
·      Support project teams during early stages where required.
Governance & Improvement
·      Maintain robust internal strategies and approval processes across all bids.
·      Track tender performance, including success rates, margin and cost accuracy.
·      Lead post-tender and post-project reviews
·      Continuously improve estimating systems, processes and strategy across your remit.
Key Skills & Essential Experience:
·      Proven experience in a senior estimating leadership role within an M&E contractor.
·      Strong track record of delivering successful bids across major projects
·      Strong understanding of building services systems and how they are delivered on site.
·      Strong commercial awareness with the ability to identify and manage risk at early stages.
·      Experience working closely with clients, consultants, and main contractors in a relationship-driven environment.
·      Experience leading and developing estimating teams
