Job Title: Field Ecologist
Location: Somerset and bordering regions
Job Type: Remote - full or part time

Job Summary:

BN Ecology are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Field Ecologist to join our team. This role focuses on conducting ecological field surveys, collecting and analysing ecological data, and the preparation of environmental reports and impact assessments. The ideal candidate will have strong field skills; particularly in identifying floral species, a solid understanding of ecological survey methods, and a passion for conserving biodiversity and natural habitats.

Key Responsibilities:

· Plan and conduct ecological field surveys, including but not limited to:
- Habitat assessments (e.g., Phase 1, UKHab, NVC)
- Protected species surveys (e.g., bats, great crested newts, reptiles, badgers, birds, etc.)
- Botanical surveys and invasive species identification
- Accurately record and manage ecological data
- Ensure compliance with relevant environmental legislation and survey guidance
· The preparation of ecological reports, including baseline assessments, impact assessments, and mitigation plans
· Liaising with clients, contractors, stakeholders, and local authorities
· Maintain high standards of health and safety during fieldwork
· Keep up to date with best practices and emerging ecological techniques

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential:

· Demonstrable experience conducting field surveys across a range of UK habitats and species
· Familiarity with ecological survey methods and relevant guidelines (e.g., CIEEM, JNCC, Natural England)
· Strong data collection, analysis, and report writing skills
· Full UK driving licence with access to own car and willingness to travel
· Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings and evenings
Desirable:
· Bachelor's degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biology, or related field
· Member (or eligible for membership) of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM)
· Protected species licences (e.g., bat, GCN)
· Experience using GIS software (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS)
· First Aid certification and relevant health & safety training (e.g., CSCS card)

· Able to work independently and as part of a team
· Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in varied terrain and weather conditions

Salary: £25,000 - £30,000 (Depending on experience)
