Financial Controller (Central Team) - Job Description REPORTS TO: Head of Finance LOCATION : Central MAT office (with occasional travel to trust schools) SALARY : Grade 10 SCP 25 £36,363 PA HOURS: 37 Hours per week CONTRACT TYPE : Permanent Purpose of the Role The Financial Controller will lead on the development and optimisation of the trust’s Sage Intacct accounting system, design and implement automation for financial processes, deliver advanced budget modelling and scenario planning, and provide robust financial analysis to support strategic decision-making. The postholder will also ensure financial controls and audit readiness and support the Head of Finance in liaison with trust schools. Key Responsibilities
Lead the development, optimisation, and ongoing management of the Sage Intacct accounting system across the trust. Design and implement automated processes for bank reconciliations, payment runs, and purchase ledger workflows. Produce and present robust financial analysis and management information to inform decision-making at trust and school levels. Support the Head of Finance in liaison with trust schools and academy business managers, including consolidations, funding allocations, and ensuring financial compliance. Oversee financial controls, ensuring audit readiness and best practice financial governance. Participate in the continuous improvement of financial processes and procedures. Assist in preparing statutory financial reports and submissions to regulatory bodies as required. Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations, policies, and procedures within the education sector.
Qualifications
Professional accounting qualification (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA) or working towards Evidence of ongoing professional development relevant to finance and accounting
Knowledge
Significant experience in a financial controller or similar senior finance role Experience of developing and managing accounting systems, particularly Sage Intacct
Skills and experience
Excellent knowledge of accounting principles, financial controls, and relevant education sector regulations Advanced IT skills, particularly with Sage Intacct and Microsoft Excel Strong analytical skills with the ability to present complex information clearly. Ability to design and implement process improvements and automation. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage a variety of stakeholders. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
