Head of Software Engineering

Location: Remote (UK-based) with required travel to Glasgow office minimum 2–3 times per month

 Salary: £75,000–£80,000

 Reports to: CTO

Backed by Octopus Group, we’re scaling fast, and we’re looking for a Head of Software Engineering to lead our software development function.

The Role

We are seeking a disciplined and forward-thinking Head of Software Engineering. Reporting to the CTO, this role will combine rigorous engineering leadership with a modern, AI-enabled approach to delivery.

Our architecture is well-engineered and thoughtfully designed. We are looking for a Head of Software Engineering who will develop on top of this foundation. 

We are building long-term systems that scale and looking for someone able to develop on top of our existing foundation.

This is a joint leadership and hands-on developer role for someone who wants to build something meaningful, lead delivery, strengthen engineering discipline, and responsibly embed AI into our development lifecycle.

You will work closely with the CTO and internal stakeholders to translate requirements into clear technical options — returning with solutions, not problems.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

• Engineering Leadership
• Lead and evolve a scalable, production-grade Software Development Life Cycle SDLC
• Drive engineering quality, security, and operational resilience, maintaining high standards across testing, CI/CD, code quality and release management
• Formalise architecture governance and quality gates
• Integrate AI tools responsibly to improve productivity and quality
