This role is within our water contracts delivering work on behalf of the client on the Thames Water Retail Contracts which involve the Smart Metering Programme and the Developer Services workstream. As part of the SHEW Team, we provide professional support and guidance to operational teams to ensure the safe delivery of jobs, projects or schemes. We promote a positive health, safety and environmental culture, ensuring compliance with legislation, industry standards and company policies.

The role involves advising, coaching and monitoring site activities to reduce risk, support operational excellence, and protect employees, contractors, the public and the environment across the Thames Water Retail footprint, covering, Greater London Borough and Thames Valley Clean Water Network.

Smart Metering & Developer Services workstreams

Optant and PMP (Progressive Metering Programme):

• Household, non-household and Bulk meter installation, repair and replacement, both internal and external to a property.
• Installation, repair and replacement of surrounding fittings (e.g. meter chambers).
• Household and non-household internal plumbing (required as a result of metering works).
• Meter survey work.
• New project support.
• Procurement and storage of meters.
• Excavation and reinstatement for new chambers.
• Backfill and reinstatement of public highway & private land.
• Sending meters away for testing.
• Replacement / repairs / disconnection / flow testing of water service pipe (supply / communication pipes) only where this work is identified while carrying out metering work; and repair / renewal / re-location / installation of stop taps.

  Customer Side leakage (CSL):

• Investigation of leaks.
• Excavation, repair and reinstatement for new chambers.
• Backfill and reinstatement of public highway & private land.

  Developer Services:

• Excavation works / Bulk Excavation of Trial Holes
• Water Mains laying
• New water service connections to properties
• Directional Moling operations
• Disconnect of Existing Water Supply to premises. 
• Disinfection of public water supply pipes
• Earthworks
• Reinstatement.

What will you be doing?

As a Health and Safety Apprentice, you will be interested in learning, problem solving, and have a passion for health and safety. You enjoy working as part of a team, are adaptable, confident, and have high levels of attention to detail. This role is for someone who loves a challenge and isn't afraid to challenge the status quo.

Your remit would be to prioritise activities, multi-task, provide data for board packs and reporting, and put forward suggestions for improvement. You will be given the support and development to become a fully qualified health and safety professional.

In this role, you will assist with inspections, system audits, tool box talks, and investigations, and eventually take ownership of tasks, trend review & analysis, and risk assessments. You will be instrumental in driving improvements and ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees, championing our 'It Starts with me campaign'

To excel in this role, you'll need to be a team player with a willingness to learn and lead by example.

What you’ll bring

• Grade C or above in at least 5 GCSEs including English and Mathematics (9-4 within the new grading system)
• A full UK or EU Driving License
• You must be able to demonstrate your Right to Work in the UK, we are unable to offer sponsorship for this role
• You must be able to start on the 1st September 2026
• You must live in a commutable distance from the office in Dartford
• Ability to work on own initiative without direct supervision with a high commitment for delivery and quality

About the Apprenticeship

At the end of your apprenticeship, you will have achieved a Level 3 Health and Environment Technician Qualification. The course length is 24 months.
