Job Description
We Build Recruitment are now looking to hire a Health and Safety Manager on behalf of our client, a leading Northwest based Civil Engineering contractor.\n\nThe Health & Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining effective health, safety, and environmental management systems across all civil engineering projects. The role ensures legal compliance, promotes a positive safety culture, and reduces risk to employees, contractors, clients, and the public.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\nHealth & Safety Management\n\nDevelop, implement, and continuously improve the company’s Health & Safety Management System.\n\nEnsure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation, regulations, and Approved Codes of Practice\n\nAct as the company’s competent person for health and safety matters\n\nSite & Project Support\n\nProvide health and safety support to civil engineering projects including highways, structures, earthworks, utilities, and groundworks\n\nConduct regular site inspections, audits, and safety tours\n\nReview and approve risk assessments, method statements (RAMS), lift plans, traffic management plans, and temporary works documentation\n\nTraining & Competence\n\nIdentify health and safety training needs and ensure appropriate training is delivered\n\nDeliver toolbox talks, safety briefings, and inductions\n\nSupport managers and supervisors in developing their health and safety competence\n\nIncident Management\n\nLead investigations into accidents, incidents, and near misses\n\nEnsure corrective and preventive actions are implemented and monitored\n\nReport incidents to enforcing authorities where required (e.g. RIDDOR)\n\nMonitoring & Reporting\n\nMonitor health and safety performance using KPIs\n\nProduce regular health and safety reports for senior management\n\nAnalyse trends and recommend improvements\n\nAudits & Compliance\n\n * Prepare for and manage external audits and client inspections\n\n * Maintain certification standards where applicable (e.g.
ISO 45001, ISO 14001)\n\n * Liaise with regulatory bodies, clients, and external consultants\n\nCulture & Leadership\n\n * Promote a proactive and positive health and safety culture across the business\n\n * Challenge unsafe behaviours and practices at all levels\n\n * Support continuous improvement and best practice in H&S performance\n\nQualifications & Experience\n\nEssential\n\n * NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent)\n\n * Proven experience in a Health & Safety role within civil engineering or construction\n\n * Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and construction regulations\n\n * Experience producing and reviewing RAMS\n\n * Full UK driving licence
