A highly supportive mainstream primary school is seeking an experienced and confident Higher Level Teaching Assistant to work within its dedicated SEN provision, specialising in supporting children with autism.
This provision is a specialist unit based within the main school building, offering a structured, nurturing environment for pupils with additional needs while maintaining inclusion within the wider school community.
This is a full-time, long-term opportunity for someone with extensive SEN experience who is ready to take the next step in their career.
About the Role
As a HLTA within the SEN provision, you will play a key role in supporting pupils with autism, delivering structured interventions, and leading small group learning sessions. You will work closely with the SENCO, teachers, therapists, and support staff to ensure pupils receive consistent, high-quality support tailored to their individual needs.
While a HLTA qualification is not essential, substantial experience working with children with SEN — particularly autism — is absolutely paramount.
Key Responsibilities
Supporting pupils with autism within a specialist SEN provision
Leading small group sessions and structured learning activities
Delivering targeted interventions to support communication, social interaction, and emotional regulation
Assisting with adapting and differentiating learning materials
Promoting positive behaviour strategies and supporting sensory needs
Encouraging independence, confidence, and engagement
Supporting transitions between the provision and mainstream classroom where appropriate
Working collaboratively with the SENCO and wider multidisciplinary team
The Ideal Candidate
Extensive experience working with children with SEN, specifically autism
Confident leading sessions and supporting learning independently
Strong understanding of behaviour management and regulation strategies
Calm, patient, and consistent approach
Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Ability to build strong, trusting relationships with pupils
Proactive, adaptable, and resilient
No formal HLTA qualification is required – experience and specialist SEN knowledge are the priority.
